And this is where many parents get confused.

They say:

“My child knows all the letters.”

Great.

But can your child tell you the sound each letter represents?

Can they blend sounds together?

Can they look at an unfamiliar word and attempt to decode it?

That is where phonics comes in.

Phonics teaches children the relationship between letters and sounds. It gives them the tools to decode words instead of depending entirely on memorisation.

For example:

When a child learns to blend those sounds, they can arrive at sat.
