RSUTH CMD, PROF. ALIKOR UNVEILS DEPARTMENT OF CARDIOLOGY, CARDIOLOGY WARDS AND ADVANCED CARDIAC IMAGING SERVICES

PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria – The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, marked a major milestone in cardiovascular healthcare with the unveiling of its Department of Cardiology, the official opening of Cardiology Wards, and the launch of two advanced cardiac imaging services: CT Coronary Angiography (CTCA) and Speckle Tracking Echocardiography during the hospital’s Cardiology Day 2026 celebration.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Prof. Chizindu A. Alikor, described the occasion as another significant step in the hospital’s commitment to delivering world-class cardiovascular care.

The Head of the Department of Cardiology, Dr. Boma Oyan, traced the evolution of cardiology services at RSUTH to the hospital’s origins in 1925, when it was established as a colonial-era nursing home. She noted that the department is now staffed by consultant cardiologists, resident doctors, specialist nurses and other healthcare professionals dedicated to comprehensive cardiovascular care.

Dr. Oyan revealed that cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of mortality globally and locally. She appealed for further investment in advanced cardiovascular infrastructure to improve patient outcomes and expand specialist services.

A major highlight of the event was an educational lecture delivered by Dr. Emmanuel Ovundah Nyeche, Consultant Cardiologist and Head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine, who presented an overview of the clinical applications of Speckle Tracking Echocardiography and CT Coronary Angiography in modern cardiovascular diagnosis and patient management.

The ceremony attracted members of RSUTH management, healthcare professionals and distinguished guests from across the medical community. Goodwill messages were delivered by the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State, Dr. (Prof.) Annabel Ureh Oparaodu; the Chief Medical Director of Palmars Hospital Ltd., Dr. Okey Ibeabuchi; the “Father of Cardiologists in Rivers State Government Service,” Dr. Goodleave N. Owhonda; the Chairman of MDCAN-RSGHs, Dr. Woroma Wonodi; the representative of the Executive Secretary of RIVCHIPP, Dr. Juliet Aleme; the Chairperson of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, RSUTH Chapter, Nurse Eucharia Obua; former Medical Director of BMSH, Dr. Paul Kua; and Prof. Jack Omodu. The Dean, of Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Prof A ChapJumbo.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Alikor reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to providing the highest standard of care for the people of Rivers State and expressed appreciation to the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, for his continued support of the healthcare sector.

The ceremony concluded with a guided tour of the newly established Department of Cardiology and its facilities.

NEWLY ELECTED NMA RIVERS CHAIRMAN PAYS THANK YOU VISIT TO RSUTH CMD

PORT HARCOURT – The newly elected Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Rivers State Branch, Dr (Prof.) Ureh Annabel Oparaodu, on Tuesday, July 28, 2026 paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director, CMD, of Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Chizindu A. Alikor, to express gratitude for his visionary leadership and support.

In response, the CMD congratulated her on her well-deserved victory, commending her capacity, character and engagement, which he said were evident in the outcome of the election. He urged her to build on the progress made by previous NMA Rivers State leadership, including that of Dr. Diamond Tamunokoro, now Secretary General of the Nigerian Medical Association nationally, and to keep inclusiveness at the core of her programmes. He pledged his continued support and prayed for her success, urging her to press forward in advancing the medical field in Rivers State.

Prof. Oparaodu promised to lead with a progressive vision, pledging collaboration with the hospital and its leadership as she takes on the role. She reaffirmed her commitment to inclusiveness and fresh initiatives for the NMA Rivers State Branch.

RSUTH CMD, PROF. ALIKOR, HOSTS HISTORIANS OF EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT SOCIETY, PLEDGES COLLABORATION ON TRAINING AND ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT

PORT HARCOURT – The Chief Medical Director of Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Chizindu A. Alikor, on Monday, July 28, 2026 warmly hosted members of the Historians of Education Development Society of Nigeria, HOEDSON, on a courtesy visit to the hospital.

The delegation, led by Professor Naboth H.A. Nwafor of the Department of Philosophy, was received at the hospital’s conference room.

Speaking during the visit, Prof. Nwafor said the purpose was two-fold: to formally invite Prof. Alikor to HOEDSON’s National Conference scheduled for October 2026, and to seek areas of collaboration to strengthen the relationship between the Society and RSUTH.

He commended Prof. Alikor for his “remarkable contributions to healthcare, education, and leadership,” noting that the CMD’s commitment has continued to position RSUTH as a hub for both medical service and academic excellence.

In his response, Prof. Alikor accepted the invitation and pledged the hospital’s support for the partnership. He stressed the importance of education in national growth.

> “Education is key in the development of any society,” Prof. Alikor, CMD of RSUTH, said. “Teachers play a vital role in shaping future generations and advancing knowledge. As a teaching hospital, we are open to collaborations that will add value.”

The CMD further requested that part of the collaboration should include educational programs and specialized trainings for RSUTH staff by members of the Society, to enhance professional development within the hospital.

Also speaking, Prof. Yusuf Abdulraman, a Representative of the National Executive of the Society and Professor of History, University of Port Harcourt, expressed the delegation’s appreciation to Prof. Alikor for his encouragement and commitment to education. In his vote of thanks, Prof. Yusuf prayed for God’s continued blessing, strength and reward upon the CMD for his “outstanding leadership and kindness.”

The visit ended on a cordial note, with both parties reaffirming their commitment to building a lasting and mutually beneficial partnership between the Historians of Education Development Society of Nigeria and Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.
