This is the official page of the Rex Jim Lawson International Highlife Music Conference organised by the University of Port Harcourt, through the Cardinal Rex Jim Lawson Chair in Music. The maiden event which holds from January 21 to 23, 2015, with theme ‘Highlife Music in West Africa: Retrospect and Prospects’, will not only showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Niger Delta but will also pr

ovide an opportunity for academics and researchers, performing musicians and bands, media and non-governmental organisations, and lovers of highlife music from all over the world to exchange ideas and share their experiences on this captivating genre of African music and culture. Presenters at the conference will explore the influences of highlife music on, and its contributions to, conflict resolution and peace enhancement initiatives, youth development and capacity building, cultural integration and social (re)construction, and economic cooperation. It is expected that optimal strategies for employing highlife music in tackling some of the socio-political, economic, cultural, and developmental problems in the Niger Delta region, Nigeria, and the West African sub-region will emerge from this conference.
