In an era of rapid technological and societal shifts, the theme of the MarkWillows Foundation's National Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Conference for Educators 2026—"Future-Proofing Education: Indispensable Skills for a Changing World"—could not be more timely. As educators, we must equip young minds not only with academic knowledge but also with essential emotional resilience, empathy, and adaptability to thrive amid uncertainty.
The conference flyer highlights an impressive lineup of speakers, including Peace Bamidele, Founder of the MarkWillows Foundation; Professor Adeosun Oyedeare from the University of Lagos; and Dr Joel O. Chigada, Principal Educator, among others. Their expertise promises invaluable insights into integrating SEL into curricula for a more holistic education.

📘 10 Signs of a Struggling Teacher – Time for Reflection and Growth? 📘
Teaching is a noble profession that shapes futures, yet it's easy to fall into habits that hinder rather than help our learners. 🌱 Let's prioritise growth over stagnation for the sake of our students.
Here are **10 thoughtful signs** to reflect upon – if any resonate, it's an opportunity to upgrade! 🚀
1. 🔊 Shouting more than speaking – Intimidation stifles confidence; calm communication builds trust.
2. 📅 Recycling old lesson notes yearly – Education evolves; great teachers research and refresh content dynamically.
3. 🙇 Blaming students for classroom chaos – Effective management lies with the teacher through clear rules and routines.
4. 📝 Memorising notes instead of mastering concepts – Deep understanding inspires true assimilation in learners.
5. 💼 Viewing teaching as a temporary role – Passion and professionalism shine when we commit fully.
6. 🏃♂️ Rushing to cover the syllabus without assessing comprehension – True learning requires checking understanding.
7. ⚖️ Punishing every mistake – Mistakes are opportunities for guidance and building confidence.
8. 🛑 Avoiding ongoing study or training – Continuous professional development is essential in our changing world.
9. ⚔️ Comparing students openly – Celebrate individual differences to foster growth and self-esteem.
10. 😨 Students fear you, but lack respect – Earn genuine respect to create an engaging learning environment.
Final Thoughts:
If you recognise three or more, don't worry – embrace training and self-improvement! 💪

💣As we approach the end of another rewarding year in education, let us reflect on the practices that truly make a difference in our classrooms.
💪Strong relationships built on genuine care and respect remain the foundation of effective classroom management. When students feel seen, heard, and valued, positive behaviour follows naturally. Small conversations, active listening, and showing interest in their lives outside lessons foster trust and mutual respect, far more powerfully than rules alone.
Equally important is creating an inclusive environment where every learner can thrive. Through thoughtful accommodations—whether instructional, environmental, behavioural, or in assessment: we remove barriers without lowering standards. Flexible seating, visual aids, clear routines, extra time when needed, and regular check-ins all signal to students that they belong and are supported.
Let us also commit to cultural responsiveness: approaching each child with professionalism, respecting diverse backgrounds, and maintaining appropriate boundaries. By modelling empathy and fairness, we help young people grow into thoughtful, confident individuals.
As we step into the new year, may we carry forward these principles: building classrooms rooted in care, inclusion, and understanding.
Wishing all educators, parents, and students a restorative break and a hopeful 2026 filled with growth and connection.
