*OPEN HEAVEN DAILY DEVOTION*

*DATE: WEDNESDAY 23RD FEBRUARY 2022*

*THEME: BENEFITS OF A LOCKDOWN 2*

*MEMORISE:*
It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes. Psalms 119:71

READ: 2 Samuel 16:5-12
5And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, thence came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera: he came forth, and cursed still as he came.

6 And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left.

7And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Come out, come out, thou bloody man, and thou man of Belial:

8 The LORD hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and the LORD hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son: and, behold, thou art taken in thy mischief, because thou art a bloody man.

9 Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head.

10 And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? so let him curse, because the LORD hath said unto him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so?

11 And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, which came forth of my bowels, seeketh my life: how much more now may this Benjamite do it? let him alone, and let him curse; for the LORD hath bidden him.

12 It may be that the LORD will look on mine affliction, and that the LORD will requite me good for his cursing this day.

MESSAGE
Our memory today is a pointer to one fact: when we are locked down, we should discover what God really wants us to learn at such times. It is amazing to read the Psalmist saying, โ€œIt is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I might learn thy statutesโ€ (Psalm 119:71). (โ€œIt is goodโ€ the Psalmist says, โ€œthat I have been afflictedโ€. For what reason? โ€œThat I might learn thy statutesโ€. This is incredible!

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

The Psalmist knew the benefit of a lockdown. In todayโ€™s Bible text, we read about Davidโ€™s experience when a palace coup was staged against him by his son Absalom. As he was fleeing, a relative of King Saul โ€“ Shimeicame forth, stoning and cursing David and his entourage. A servant of David, Abishai was enraged and sought permission to kill Shimei but Davidโ€™s reaction was completely different, as he believed that God was teaching him a lesson through all the problems he was faced with.

"And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, which came forth of my bowels, seeketh my life: how much more now may this Benjamite do it? Let him alone, and let him curse; for the Lord hath bidden him." 2 Samuel 16:11

There are a lot of lessons to learn from the lockdown of David. David believed that God allowed it for a purpose. He did not fight back at the man who cursed and insulted him since his son Absalom, had done worse. He believed that all things would work for his good (Romans 8:28). He taught his followers that the furnace of humiliation would perfect Godโ€™s will for his life. Children of God should share this belief for whatever situation they may find themselves in, with faith that all things would eventually work together for their good.

PRAYER POINT
Father, please turn all my gloomy moments to brightness today, in Jesus name.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Numbers 34-36

AUTHOR: PASTOR E. A ADEBOYE

HYMN 27: When Upon Life's Billow You Are Tempest Tossed

1. When upon lifeโ€™s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God hath done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

2.Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will be singing as the days go by.

3. When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold.
Count your many blessings, money cannot buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your Lord on high.

4. So amid the conflict, whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journeyโ€™s end.

*THEME: HOW TO DEAL WITH MOUNTAINS III.*

*MEMORISE:*

So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
JOSHUA 6:20

*BIBLE READING: JOSHUA 6:1-20*

1Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.

2 And the LORD said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour.

3 And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.

4 And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams' horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.

5 And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.

6 And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD.

7 And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the LORD.

8 And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns passed on before the LORD, and blew with the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them.

9 And the armed men went before the priests that blew with the trumpets, and the rereward came after the ark, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.

10 And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.

11 So the ark of the LORD compassed the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.

12 And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD.

13 And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and blew with the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; but the rereward came after the ark of the LORD, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.

14 And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days.

15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.

16 And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city.

17 And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the LORD: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

18 And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed, when ye take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.

19 But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD.

20 So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

*MESSAGE:*

Today, we shall continue our discussion on how to deal with mountains which symbolizes the challenges we face in life.
Briefly, we shall consider other ways. One, we can deal with mountains by blowing them away, as we see in our Bible text of today. The Bible says that Jericho, which was the bypass for the children of Israel to the promised land, was shut against them, thus hindering their march to their destiny.
The wall of Jericho was so thick that houses were built on it, hence it was a great mountain before the children of Israel.
The only option was to blow off the walls. This however, required divine intervention.

After the children of Israel had done what the Lord commanded them to, the wall of the city was blown off and they had free entry into the city of Jericho.

โ€œSo the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.โ€ JOSHUA 6:20

In the above Scripture, we can see that obedience on the part of the people blew off the mountain in their path.

Another way of dealing with a mountain is by living on it. This means living above principalities and powers as in the case of Prophet Elisha in 2 KINGS 4:18-37. Mountain dwellers are mountain movers. In addition, we can fly over the mountains. ISAIAH 40:31 says we will mount up with wings as eagles when we wait upon the Lord.
I have taught in many places that the correct way to wait upon God is through high praises, worship and adoration. When we do this, our strength shall be renewed, and the enemies shall never defeat us, neither shall we be weary in the journey of life.

You want to conquer the mountains hindering your progress in life? Wait upon the Lord in praises, worship and thanksgiving unto His holy name.

*PRAYER POINT:*

Father, please teach me how to deal with the mountains of my life. Make me victorious, oh Lord.

*HYMN 16: O GOD OUR HELP IN AGES PAST.*

1. O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.

2. Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defense is sure.

3. Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
To endless years the same.

4. Thy Word commands our flesh to dust,
โ€œReturn, ye sons of menโ€:
All nations rose from earth at first,
And turn to earth again.

5. A thousand ages in Thy sight
Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.

6. The busy tribes of flesh and blood,
With all their lives and cares,
Are carried downwards by the flood,
And lost in follโ€™wing years.

7. Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly, forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opโ€™ning day.

8. Like flowโ€™ry fields the nations stand
Pleased with the morning light;
The flowโ€™rs beneath the mowerโ€™s hand
Lie withโ€™ring ere โ€™tis night.

9. O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guard while troubles last,
And our eternal home.

*TOPIC: BLESSINGS OF UNITY*

*MEMORISE:*
*โ€œFor this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.โ€ โ€“ (1 John 3:11)*

*READ: Psalm 133:1-3 (KJV)*
1. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

2. It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard; that went down to the skirts of his garments;

3. As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion; for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.

*MESSAGE:*
In our devotional today, we will consider the blessings of unity, which have been identified in the Scriptures to include joy, peace, and progress.

When you go through the Bible reading of today, you will observe the Psalmist lamenting, almost in despair. Perhaps this was so because he had seen how elusive unity was among the brethren, even in his time.

*Today, despite the fact that we say โ€œunited we stand; divided we fallโ€ in words, sing it in songs and rehearse it in poems, there are still divisions among us. Sadly, this is also the case among believers who should be the leading lights for this dark world. This is the reason joy, peace and progress have eluded so many believers today.*

This is why, as a Church,
we have not been able to accomplish the Great Commission as effectively as we desire. How can two missionaries commissioned by the same organisation to the same field of operation not be united? Sadly, this is the state of the Body of Christ in many places today. Believers now fall prey to the enemy, becoming casualties of this disunity.

*If the Body of Christ can work together in unity, todayโ€™s Bible reading says our blessings are guaranteed. The subject of unity is so important that our Lord Jesus Christ spent time praying about it in Johnโ€™s gospel.* *John 17:21,26:*
*That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me...And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.*

*The absence of love is a major cause of disunity. Jesus however, has prayed about this too. We see that in todayโ€™s memory verse. Beloved, let us begin to work towards the fulfilment of our Lordโ€™s prayer, so that the Church can make headway in our missionary and evangelistic endeavours.* Let us love - not in words alone but also in deed. This way, we will maintain unity.

*May the Lord help us all as believers to live together in harmony and work in unity, in the mighty name of Jesus.*

*PRAYER POINT:*
*Father, please let love - Your love, fill the hearts of all Your children and unite us all, in the mighty name of Jesus.*

*HYMN - IN CHRIST ALONE MY HOPE IS FOUND*

1. In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

2. In Christ alone! Who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live.

3. There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

4. No gift in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the love of Christ I'll stand.

THEME: CHRISTIAN COURTSHIP.

MEMORIZE:
Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. Hebrews 13:4

BIBLE READING: EPHESIANS 4:14-15

14. That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

15. But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

MESSAGE
It is one thing to choose the right partner in marriage and it is another to choose the right approach to courtship.

A wrong approach to Christian courtship can still lead to problems or failure even when the right choice has been made.

Therefore, believers in courtship must be holy through and through if they would eat the good of the land of marriage (Isaiah 1:19).

Sister, you must know that a man will typically be at his best during courtship. He would call you by different pet names, please you and make you feel secure.

However, once the wedding ceremony is over and you begin to live together, his shortcomings will be more exposed to you.

The saying that love is blind may appear true but the one that also says marriage is an eye-opener has equally been proven to be true now and again.

Men are however not the only ones guilty of this.

Brother, you will also discover a lot more about the personality of your wife after the wedding ceremony.

This is why the world recommends that couples should cohabit during courtship but should this be found among children of God? The simple answer is No!.

Ephesians 4:14 says:

โ€œThat we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;โ€

The fact that you are in courtship does not give you the license to begin to cohabit. Trial marriage has no place in Christianity; it is whoredom.
Some so-called sisters also try to seduce nave brothers to get them pregnant and the result is what the world calls a shotgun marriage one not properly prepared for.

God abhors this seriously (Hebrews 13:4) Christian courtship must be characterised with sincerity. You must be able to share your past and present experiences with your would-be spouse.

You both should also lay your future bare in the hands of Jesus Christ.

While there may be sincere disagreements during courtship, you would have to prayerfully re-evaluate it if the relationship is rife with troubles from the sinful demands of your partner. A broken courtship is better than a broken marriage. Be warned!

KEY POINT:
Ask the Almighty God to guide our youths such that Christian courtships will culminate in holy wedlock and glorious marriages.

*BIBLE READING: PSALM 85:1-13*

1Lord, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob.

2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah.

3 Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger.

4 Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease.

5 Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations?

YOUR FRUITS MUST REMAIN

Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward (2 John 1:8).

In John 20:21, Jesus said, โ€œโ€ฆas my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.โ€ He sent us with the fullness of the Spirit (John 3:34); and so, we must produce lasting results in bearing fruits of righteousness. In John 15:16, He said, โ€œYe have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remainโ€ฆ.โ€ In these last days, weโ€™re reaching a lot of people with the Word of the Gospel; weโ€™re bearing fruits. But these fruits must remain. We donโ€™t just walk away after weโ€™ve reached them for Christ; we must follow them up. The Bible says, โ€œAnd some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they doโ€ (Acts 15:36). When people give their hearts to the Lord, theyโ€™re like new born babies. Thatโ€™s why the Bible says as new born babes they should desire the sincere milk of the Word that they may grow thereby (1 Peter 2:2). They need to grow and be established in Christ. So, you must continue to teach them the Word, encourage them and travail in prayer until Christ is formed in them as Paul said in Galatians 4:19. In 2 Corinthians 11:3-4, the Apostle Paul shows us that Satan could take advantage of those who arenโ€™t yet firmly rooted in the Word and deceive them as he did Eve. They could be tempted by others who are preaching a different message or being led by some other spirits. Therefore, in your evangelical efforts, persist until you see that those youโ€™ve ministered to are established in Christ, firmly rooted and grounded in Him, and they in turn are winning others.

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank you for the mighty harvest of souls recorded around the world in these last days through the evangelical efforts of your children everywhere. I pray for the new converts, that Christ may dwell in their hearts by faith; and that they, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend the depth and magnitude of your love, being filled with all the fullness of God, in Jesusโ€™ Name. Amen.
