A couple of weeks ago, the Rotary Club of Trans Amadi hosted its annual spelling competition for both primary and secondary categories.
One of the centers had 111 spellers at the preliminaries, with only 10 spellers out of the 111 advancing to the finals. Notably, five out of the 10 finalists were pupils under the tutelage of Pearl Diction and Oratory Solutions.
And at another Center two of our learners made it to the finals.
The words were pronounced according to phonetic transcription in the English Dictionary, which made them sound different from regular pronunciations. However, our pupils were able to decipher each word and spell correctly, which contributed to their victory.
Moving forward to the finals, three of our students placed in the top 10 in the primary category, and one in the secondary category.

Another factor contributing to this victory was early preparation, as Pearl Diction and Oratory Solutions organizes spelling competitions within schools to prepare students for external competitions.
We give God Almighty all the glory.

Let's throw back to September, at EVIG International School and Lexington Ville Academy, where we conducted a four-hour crash course. I had set the following objectives to achieve:

1. To enable participants to master the 44 phonetic symbols, thereby facilitating accurate articulation of English words.

2. Many roadside elocutionists disseminate incorrect knowledge to educators and learners. I aimed to make the training an eye opener, encouraging critical thinking and discernment.

3. To familiarize participants with the correct pronunciation of everyday words and expressions.

Were these objectives achieved? Absolutely. One hour of the training was dedicated to practical exercises. I provided words for transcription and interpretation. Promising a free data subscription to anyone who accurately completed the tasks. Notably, some teachers flawlessly transcribed the given words, while a few others accurately interpreted them. I felt immense joy and a sense of fulfillment.

I extend my gratitude to Jehovah.

The objective of phonics is to help children learn the principle of sounds, the idea that letters represent sounds of spoken language and that there is an organized, logical and predictable relationship between written letters and spoken sounds considering the fact that every letter makes a sound.

Pearl fun phonics series (the nursery books) have been uniquely designed with very practical and useful play way methods to enable a child identify sounds and develop excellent skills needed for reading and writing. Upon using this book, a child will also be able to recognize and pronounce unfamiliar words.

Have you ever wondered why there is a conspicuous mother tongue interference to the way English language is been spoken in Nigeria? Have you ever wondered why most Nigerian’s have a great challenge in the pronunciation of words? Well, here is one of the reasons.
During the colonial era, Nigerians were taught directly by the British, but as more people began to embrace the western education, (which of course have come to stay) more teacher were recruited to meet the demand at that time, including the half-baked. Some of those teachers use our indigenous language to teach English and that caused a noticeable mother tongue affectation. Those who were taught in a wrong way graduated and became teachers; Thus mispronunciation of words was passed from generations to generations as children learn from their teacher, parents and people around them.
Every child is born with a Language Acquisition Device (LAD) presently called Universal Grammar. It enables the child to speak several languages until he reaches six years old when this device expires. After it expires, the child finally gets acquainted to the language of his environment.
Therefore, there is need to place emphasis on diction starting from the cradle to totally eradicate this mother tongue interference as well as applying the Globally Acceptable Standard English Diction in their speech and writing. We need the 26 letters of the English Alphabet to enables us read. But we need to gain a mastery of the forty-four (44) sounds in English language for us to speak and articulate properly.

The primary books have been designed with useful contents to enable children gain a mastery of the forty-four (44) sounds of English language, to prepare ahead and be well equipped for future test of orals in WAEC and most importantly to enable a child express himself using the right diction.
