SAFEGUARDING AND EMPOWERING CHILDREN THROUGH INTENTIONAL PARENTING DURING THE HOLIDAY
INTRODUCTION
The holiday season gives children more free time, but it can also expose them to risks that may be less visible during the school term. Intentional parenting means that parents do not simply leave children to “enjoy the holiday,” but deliberately create a safe, supervised and nurturing environment where children can learn, play and grow.

SEVEN WAYS PARENTS CAN SAFEGUARD CHILDREN DURING THE HOLIDAY
1. KNOW WHERE YOUR CHILD IS
i. Know where the child is going, who they are going with and when they are expected back.
ii. Avoid leaving young children unsupervised.

2. TEACH BODY SAFETY
i. Teach children that their bodies belong to them.
ii. Help them understand appropriate and inappropriate touching.
iii. Teach them to say “No,” “Stop,” and “Tell a trusted adult” when they feel unsafe.

3. BE INTENTIONAL ABOUT ONLINE SAFETY:
i. Monitor children's internet use, games and social-media activities.
ii. Teach them not to share personal information, photographs, passwords or their location with strangers online.
iii. Encourage children to tell you when something online makes them uncomfortable.

4. CHOOSE CAREGIVERS CAREFULLY
i. Do not assume that everyone who loves children is automatically safe.
ii. Know the adults who supervise or spend extended time with your children.
iii. Take children's concerns seriously.

5. CREATE OPEN COMMUNICATION
i. Make your home a safe place where children can talk without immediately being judged or punished.
ii. Ask questions such as:

“What was the best part of your day?”

“Did anything make you uncomfortable today?”

“Is there anything you want to tell me?”

6. TEACH SAFETY OUTSIDE THE HOME
i. Discuss road safety, swimming/water safety, fire safety and what to do if they become separated from you.
ii. Teach younger children their parent's/caregiver's name and how to seek help from a safe adult.

7. ESTABLISH HEALTHY ROUTINES
i. Even during holidays, maintain reasonable sleeping, eating, hygiene, learning and recreational routines.

ii. Give children meaningful activities rather than allowing excessive unsupervised screen time.

THE ROLE OF INTENTIONAL PARENTING
Intentional parenting is not about controlling every activity a child engages in. It is about being present, observant, approachable and deliberate.

“Children need freedom to explore, but they also need boundaries that protect them while they explore.”
A Simple Holiday Safeguarding Formula

CONNECT → SUPERVISE → TEACH → LISTEN → RESPOND
i. Connect with your child.
ii. Supervise age-appropriately.
iii. Teach safety skills.
iv. Listen without dismissing concerns.
v. Respond promptly when something seems wrong.

CONCLUSION
A safe holiday is not created by luck. It is created by intentional parents who stay connected, establish boundaries, teach children protective skills and remain alert to potential risks. Our goal should not only be to keep children busy during the holiday but to keep them safe, heard, protected and empowered.

FIVE MAJOR THINGS THAT CAN BE DONE TO INFLUENCE OTHERS POSITIVELY

1. LEAD BY EXAMPLE:
Demonstrate the behaviour, values, and attitude you want others to adopt.

2. BUILD GENUINE RELATIONSHIPS Show care, respect, empathy, and interest in people. People are more receptive to those who genuinely care about them.

3. COMMUNICATE POSITIVELY
Use encouraging words, listen actively, and give constructive feedback rather than criticism.

4. ENCOURAGE AND EMPOWER OTHERS
Recognize people's strengths, appreciate their efforts, and help them grow in confidence and ability.

5. SERVE WITH INTEGRITY
Be honest, dependable, humble, and consistent. Your character and actions can inspire others to become better.

HOW TO HANDLE DIFFICULT LEARNERS EFFECTIVELY

Not every difficult learner is a bad learner. Sometimes, the child is simply seeking attention, struggling academically, facing challenges at home, or trying to express emotions they cannot explain.

PRACTICAL WAYS TEACHERS CAN HANDLE DIFFICULT LEARNERS EFFECTIVELY:

✅ STAY CALM AND PROFESSIONAL
Avoid shouting, insulting, or reacting emotionally. A calm teacher can control situations better than an angry one.

✅ UNDERSTAND THE ROOT CAUSE
Ask yourself: WHY IS THIS LEARNER BEHAVING THIS WAY? There may be academic, emotional, social, or family issues behind the behaviour.

✅ BUILD A POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP
Spend time talking with the learner privately. Learners are more likely to cooperate with teachers they trust and respect.

✅ SET CLEAR EXPECTATIONS Make classroom rules simple, clear, and consistent. Learners should know what is acceptable and what is not.

✅ PRAISE GOOD BEHAVIOUR Catch them doing something right. Positive reinforcement often works better than constant correction.

✅ GIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
Assign small leadership roles such as class monitor, group leader, or material organizer. Responsibility can improve behavior.

✅ AVOID PUBLIC EMBARRASSMENT
Correct learners privately whenever possible. Public humiliation often leads to resistance and resentment.

✅ USE ENGAGING TEACHING METHODS
Many "difficult" learners become disruptive because they are bored. Make lessons interactive and interesting.

✅ WORK WITH PARENTS Maintain regular communication with parents or guardians. A united effort between home and school produces better results.

✅ BE PATIENT
Behaviour change takes time. Consistency and patience often achieve what punishment cannot.

📌 REMEMBER:
Every difficult learner carries potential. The teacher who refuses to give up may become the reason that child succeeds in life.

QUESTION FOR TEACHERS:
What is the most challenging learner behaviour you have ever dealt with in your classroom?

7 TYPES OF PARENTS EVERY SCHOOL OWNER AND HEAD TEACHER SHOULD CAREFUL OF NEXT TERM. :

One thing I can say anywhere is that running a private school is not

only about teaching children. It is also about working with parents.

I know you are spending a lot of time and money to look for and get new students.

That is good. But I want you to know that it is not every parent that is good for your school.

One or two difficult parents can give you and your teachers sleepless nights.

They can discourage other parents. They can damage your school's image.

They can even cause serious problems for you in the aspect of getting money to run your school.

I am not saying you should reject every difficult parent …… No.

What I am saying is that you should know who such parents are,

understand how they behave and put in place clear rules for handling them.

In this gist, I will like to show you 7 types of parents you must be care of next term.

🎯 (1) The Parent Who Never Pays School Fees on Time.

This parent always has an excuse …. "I will pay next week."

"My salary has not come." ……. "I am expecting money." Their promises never end.

What they don't know is that delaying the payment of school fees will affect the

amount of money that is available for you to run your school.

And such parents will make it difficult for you to pay your teachers

buy learning materials and run your school smoothly.

🎯 (2) The Parent Who Thinks School Rules Do Not Apply to Them.

This type of parent wants special treatment for themselves every time.

They want to pay whenever they like. They want their child to come to school whenever they like.

They want the teacher to conduct a special class for their child, etc.

They expect you to change or bend your school rules and regulations just to please them.

🎯 (3) The Parent Who Always Defends Their Child.

This type of parent believe their child can never do anything wrong.

Even when there is clear evidence, they will still blame the teacher.

And experience have shown that children whose parents never

accept corrections will always be difficult for you and your school to manage

🎯 (4) The Parent Who Complains About Everything.

No matter what you do, they are never satisfied.

The school fee is too high ….. The homework is too much.

The homework is too small. There are too many activities and events in the school.

All manners of complaints. They will never be satisfied with what the school is doing.

🎯 (5) The Parent Who Disrespects Your Teachers and Other School Workers.

This type of parent will always shout at your teachers and other school workers.

They will insult or threaten you, your team of teachers with police and other security agency.

You have to be very careful and avoid this type of parent.

This is because your teachers will feel unsafe and

unappreciated when parents continue to disrespect them.

🎯 (6) The Parent Who Spreads Rumours.

Parents that are fond of spreading rumours about your school can

destroy the trust parents and other people have in your school.

🎯 (7) The Parent Who Wants to Run Your School.

This parent wants to decide everything. They will tell you the teacher who should teach their children.

They question every decision you make as a school. Be careful of this type of parent.

I am not saying you should not Listen to the parents of your students ….. but

remember that you are the school owner and you have the right to make your decisions.

As I am about to close, I want to say that working to be the best school does not

mean you should accommodate every type of parent with their behaviour.

You must attract parents who believe in the value and respect your school’s policies.

Thank you
