RIVERS STATE GOVERNOR APPROVES IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW SALARY STRUCTURE FOR TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS

The Executive Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has approved the implementation of the new salary structure for all staff of Rivers State-owned Tertiary Institutions with effect from the year 2026.

The Honourable Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor, made this disclosure during a familiarization visit to the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, IAUE, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

Dr. Nwagor stated that the visit which held at the Postgraduate Hall of the University was aimed at listening to stakeholders, understanding the realities on ground, and exploring areas of closer collaboration between the Rivers State Government and the University for the benefit of the people.

He explained that the payment of the new salary structure and arrears will commence as soon as funds are released by the Rivers State Government.

The implementation is in line with the 2026 FGN-ASUU and FGN-SSANU Agreements to improve welfare packages and ensure industrial harmony. The upward review covers the Consolidated University Academic Staff Salary Structure [CONUASS] and the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Staff Salary Structure [CONTISS] as well as improved allowances and other benefits contained in the agreements.

The Honourable Commissioner commended the Vice-Chancellor of IAUE, Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, and his Management Team for the warm reception and for producing quality teachers who are shaping learning outcomes in primary and secondary schools across Rivers State.

Dr. Nwagor urged the University to remain committed to quality, accountability, and measurable outcomes so that every naira invested in education translates to improved learning, stronger research, and employable graduates.

He stressed the need for IAUE to become a leading centre for research in Teacher Education, Science, Mathematics, Technology, and Educational Management, and for research outputs to provide practical solutions to societal problems and inform sound public policy.

The former Associate Dean, Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, called for the production of teachers who are academically sound, technologically competent, ethically grounded, innovative, and ready for the 21st-century classroom.

He also emphasized compliance with the National Universities Commission (NUC) Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards to ensure national and global relevance, and urged the University to measure programmes and facilities against clear performance indicators while addressing challenges with determination.

Dr. Nwagor further encouraged stronger linkages with industries, professional bodies, and the private sector to create opportunities for internships, entrepreneurship, and graduate employment. He also called for the re-engagement of the University’s vast alumni network as partners in institutional growth.

He assured that the Ministry of Education will continue to champion the prudent use of public resources and will bring forward to Government, for appropriate consideration and support, issues that require attention within available resources and policy.

The Commissioner described the visit as the beginning of a deeper partnership, adding that together, they will build the Rivers State of the founding fathers’ dream.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, expressed gratitude to Governor Siminalayi Fubara for approving the implementation of the agreement with the Unions. He assured that the University remains committed to its responsibilities and to complying with directives from the National Universities Commission [NUC].

Professor Onuchuku appealed for increased Government intervention in the areas of adequate hostel accommodation, staff offices, classrooms, science laboratories, perimeter fencing for security, power supply, and the rehabilitation of the deplorable access road to the University.

He emphasized that sustainable development of the University cannot be achieved without adequate funding, and called on all stakeholders to join hands with the State Government in advancing the growth of the ivory tower.

The Honourable Commissioner was accompanied on the visit by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Her Excellency Dr Mina Tele Ikuru, wife of the former Deputy Governor of Rivers State Engineer Tele Ikuru, and other Directors of the Ministry.

OFFICIAL CLARIFICATION ON REPORTED SECURITY INCIDENT AT IAUE

The Management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) has taken note of reports circulating in the media and on social media platforms concerning an alleged cult-related incident involving gunfire within the University environment.

Management wishes to clarify that, contrary to reports suggesting that the shooting was sporadic, preliminary information indicates that the gunfire was targeted at another suspected cultist. Management considers it important that such sensitive security matters are reported accurately and responsibly, as inaccurate or sensational reports could create unnecessary fear and tension within the University community and the wider public.

Management further clarifies that the individual involved was apprehended by a combined team of University Security personnel and OSPAC, as constituted by the University Management, And also handed over to the security agencies. Appropriate steps are being taken to ensure that the matter is properly investigated and handled in accordance with the law.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Okey Onuchuku, remains firmly committed to the safety and security of students, staff and other members of the University community. He has directed and continues to support all necessary security measures aimed at maintaining a peaceful, secure and conducive environment for teaching, learning and other University activities.

Management also strongly advises against the politicisation of this incident. The safety and security of members of the University community should not be subjected to political narratives, speculation or partisan interests.

The issue at hand is a security matter, and it should be treated strictly as such. Anyone found to have participated in, aided, abetted or otherwise contributed to any act capable of threatening the peace and security of the University will be subject to appropriate investigation and, where culpability is established, the full weight of the law, irrespective of status, affiliation or background.

Management therefore calls on all students, staff, parents, stakeholders, media practitioners, bloggers and members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information or using the incident to inflame passions.

The University will continue to work closely with relevant security agencies to prevent criminal activities, protect lives and property, and ensure that the University environment remains safe for all.

Management appreciates the cooperation and understanding of members of the University community and urges everyone to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding.

SUSPENSION OF STUDENTS’ UNION GOVERNMENT WEEK ACTIVITIES

This is to inform the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Community that all remaining activities for the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week have been suspended by the University Management with immediate effect.

Students are therefore advised to return to classes on Thursday August 13th, 2026 for normal academic activities.

Any student who fails to attend lectures will be held responsible for their actions.

Students are also strongly warned to desist from any action that is inimical to their academic pursuit and the peace of the University.

IAUE Holds Pre-Resource Assessment Workshop for HODs and Deans Ahead of NUC Verification

The Academic Planning Unit of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, IAUE, on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, organized a Pre-Resource Assessment Workshop for Heads of Department and Deans of Faculty in preparation for the forthcoming NUC Resource Verification exercise.

The workshop, which held at the post graduate Hall of the University, brought together professors, deans, and HODs across faculties.

Declaring the workshop open, the Vice Chancellor, prof. Okechukwu onuchukwu, heavily represented by the University Librarian, Prof. Emmanuel Okwu, appreciated all principal officers present. He stressed the importance of the workshop, noting that it was key to ensuring the university’s readiness for the NUC exercise.

Also speaking, the Director of the Academic Planning Unit, who welcomed participants, stated that the workshop was organized to assess the level of preparedness of departments. He added that the university has already invested significantly and is now awaiting NUC verification.

Three resource persons delivered presentations during the session. The Director Academic Planning Prof. Joseph Kinanee spoke on “NUC Resource Verification and Their Requirements,” Director Quality Assurance Prof. Levi Doe Kalagbor addressed “The Role of Staff in Successful Resource Verification Exercise,” while Prof. Isaac Ogundu, also Dean Faculty of Vocational and Technical Education took participants through “NUC Scoring Format/Guide and Its Implication for Approval Status.”

The presentations were followed by an interactive Questions and Answers session where participants sought clarifications and received adequate responses from the speakers.

In his closing remarks, the representative of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Okwu, thanked everyone for their active participation. He expressed optimism that the university would record a successful outcome in the upcoming NUC resource verification.

The programme ended with a closing prayer and refreshment.

EMPHASIS ON ACQUISITION OF SOFT SKILLS IN FOCUS AS CAREER SERVICES CENTRE HOLDS TRAINING WORKSHOP FOR STUDENTS

The acquisition of soft skills for students to become self-reliant and eligible for employment by industries took centre stage during a career training programme on “Communication Skills and Soft skills Development “ for students of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education

The training programme, the third in the series was put together by the Career Services Centre of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) Rumuolumeni Port-Harcourt Rivers State Nigeria on Tuesday 30th June, 2026 at the Postgraduate Hall of the University .

Declaring the workshop open, the Director Academic Planning Unit, Professor Joseph Kinanee who represented the Vice Chancellor of IAUE Professor Okechuku Onuchuku commended the Centre for ensuring that in addition to hard skills like degrees and certificates, students acquire soft skills noting that TETFUND established Career Services Centre across Nigerian Universities for that purpose.

He implored the students to be intentional and to learn how to communicate emphasizing that many have missed golden opportunities because of lack of good communication skills. He also explained that the Federal Government overhauled the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) after fifty three (53) years of its existence and that Corp Members will now be in the Orientation Camp for a period of six weeks as against the normal three weeks.

Apart from the period extension, Professor Joseph Kinanee stated that there is transition to Civilian led leadership with the traditional Khaki uniform being replaced with indigenous Adire fabric. He also informed of the change in the passing out parade which will now take the form of a graduation ceremony. The National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) he added is now soft skills development and employment oriented.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) the Director Academic Planning Unit further explained revised the curriculum of all programmes with emphasis on aspects of development of the 21st century skills He enjoined the students to pay attention and to take the training seriously while imploring the Career Services Centre to evaluate and track the process and output of the workshops on the students and to give progress report to TETFUND .

In his address, the Director Career Services Centre IAUE Dr Hager Amakiri said that the training reflects the University’s commitment to preparing students for success beyond the classroom. She informed that the initiative facilitated through the support of TETFUND investments has strengthened Career Services Centres in addition to expanding opportunities for students to acquire practical skills that enhance their career readiness and lifelong development.

While appreciating TETFUND valuable contributions to higher education in the country, Dr Amakiri thanked the Vice Chancellor of IAUE Professor Okechuku Onuchuku for his unwaivering support for students focused initiatives which has continued to strengthen the activities of the Career Services Centre and promote the holistic development of IAUE students.

She encouraging the students to listen, engage with the facilitators and take advantage of the opportunity to build skills that will distinguish them in their future careers. The knowledge and experiences gained she further stated would remain valuable after the programme that will provide them with practical insights and contribute meaningfully to their academic journey and future careers.

The Dean Faculty of Humanities, Professor Ibiere Ken-Maduako and the Director Research and Development while delivering their lectures on “Career Training on Communication Skills and Soft skills Development” pointed out that students would appreciate, understand and be more tolerant of people’s culture when they have soft skills and also become experts in effective communication.

They described soft skills as language behaviour, character traits, ability to have empathy and reason with others noting that acquisition of soft skills will make them the most valuable assets. They also informed them to find and trade the path that no one else has adding that stretched zone is where innovations spring from and encouraged the students to adapt to situations and explore new angles.

In her vote of thanks, the Deputy Director of Career Services Centre Professor Dorothy Inko-Tariah expressed gratitude to TETFUND for the disbursement cycle to Nigerian Territory Education through its Career Services Centre and to the Vice Chancellor of IAUE Professor Okechuku Onuchuku for releasing the funds for the training workshop for students to build employability and for them to connect with industries.

She also appreciated the resource persons for motivating and inspiring the students with their presentations.
The next workshop is scheduled for Tuesday July 7, 2026 at the Postgraduate Hall of the University.

PROFESSOR JUDE NWOKA CALLS FOR APPOINTMENT OF CHIEF HAPPINESS MANAGEMENT OFFICER IN ORGANIZATIONS

A Professor of Human Resource Management and Corporate Governance, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) Rumuolumeni Port-Harcourt Rivers State Nigeria, Professor Jude Nwoka has called for the appointment of Chief Happiness Management Officer in organizations.

Speaking while delivering the 80th inaugural Lecture of the University on Thursday June 25, 2026 at the University auditorium, on the topic "Happiness Management as an Emerging Paradigm in Human Resource Management: The PLC Model for Enhancing Workplace Productivity", Professor Nwoka emphasized the importance of Happiness Management and PLC Model for enhancing workplace productivity.

He stressed that Happiness Management and PLC Model boosts business bottom line, help employees flourish in their roles, make them become more engaged, more creative and efficient. He remarked that under the model, employees unique strengths are effectively utilized with healthy social relationships supported with culture. This for him prevents burnout, increase sales, improves individual performance, encourages employees to be highly focused and creative, improves productivity, boost task efficiency and foster a supportive work culture.

According to the Dean of Faculty of Administration and Management Sciences, Happiness Management and PLC Model reduces costly attrition when companies invest in the overall welfare of their people, staff turnover and absenteeism drop drastically keeping experienced, satisfied employees and allow firms to retain top talents without incurring heavy recruitment and retaining costs.

The 80th inaugural Lecturer described Happiness Management as a strategic management tool that creates brand pride adding that employees who feel emotionally supported become better advocates for the organization, directly elevating the quality of customer service. He stressed the need for Human Resource managers to play the roles of a coach, parent, priest and motivator for a healthy workplace culture and to increase employees engagement productivity, reduce turnover and employee stress.

Organizations, the Professor of Human Resource Management and Corporate Governance argued should build a fun culture and the ability to have fun at work for happiness and a higher sense of well-being and better mental health. He also argued that employees well-being, psychological safety and emotional rewards are just as vital as financial compensation. Companies and organizations that fail to understand the role that Happiness Management plays in an organization"'s productivity, profitability and growth will lose their best people.

Professor Jude Nwoka recommended that Management of Organizations should create environment where employees can develop their talents, exercise their virtue and contribute to common good. He also recommended that Organizations should invest in long term employee development, providing continuous learning opportunities and encouraging career growth.

The Dean of Faculty of Administration and Management Sciences suggested that Management foster a supportive culture in their organizations where employees feel like they belong and make them feel more human for them to grow, collaborate and feel genuinely appreciated. Also that Management should foster an environment of open communication, trust and inclusivity and equip leaders and Human Resource Managers with emotional intelligence skills to support their teams and remove obstacles.

Furthermore, ethical leadership, balanced policies and supportive relationships should be essential components of such an environment. Organizations should also move beyond short term incentives and cultivate lasting happiness and human flourishing.

Earlier the Vice Chancellor of IAUE Professor Okechuku Onuchuku described the day as a significant one in the life of the celebrant. He lauded him for the concepts and for arguing that Organizations should ensure that the rights of their employees are protected to make them happy.

Professor Nnamdi Anero in a vote of thanks appreciated the chiefs, elders, traditional rulers, political associates and the academia for turning up to cheer the celebrant. He also appreciated members of Senate for gracing the occasion.
