IPS, RSU UNVEILS GROUNDBREAKING PETROL STATION MAP AND LAUNCHES GROUNDWATER PROTECTION CAMPAIGN
The Institute of Pollution Studies (IPS), Rivers State University (RSU), has recorded a major milestone in environmental research with the unveiling of a comprehensive map of petrol filling stations in Port Harcourt Municipality and the launch of an innovative groundwater protection campaign.
The initiative, unveiled on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, represents a significant breakthrough in efforts to safeguard groundwater resources in Rivers State and the wider Niger Delta region. The newly developed map provides critical data for environmental monitoring, urban planning, and regulatory oversight, positioning RSU as leading in sustainable environmental management.
As part of the campaign, the Institute flagged off a scientific “Bucket Experiment” designed to assess the impact of buried municipal waste on groundwater quality. The research will generate evidence-based insights to support improved waste management systems and promote the adoption of engineered landfill solutions across the region.
Speaking at the event, the Director of IPS, Prof. C. L. Eze, highlighted the Institute’s commitment to advancing environmental protection through cutting-edge research, stakeholder engagement, and strategic partnerships. He noted that the findings from the mapping exercise and groundwater study will strengthen policy advocacy, enhance environmental awareness, and contribute to sustainable development in the Niger Delta.
Unveiling the project, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, commended the Institute for its innovation and forward-thinking approach. He described the initiatives as aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and affirmed the University’s commitment to supporting research that delivers measurable social, environmental, and economic impact.
The Vice-Chancellor further announced that the Director of the Institute will represent the University at an upcoming international meeting in Kigali, providing an opportunity to showcase the Institute’s pioneering work on a global platform.
These landmark initiatives underscore Rivers State University’s growing reputation as a hub for environmental research excellence and its dedication to promoting sustainable development, public health, and ecological resilience across Rivers State and the Niger Delta region.
