THE MESSAGE OF THE PASSOVER
LUKE 22:19-20
And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. (KJV)
We said that Moses by faith kept the Passover feast. This means that the Passover feast was a shadow communicating the reality of the fulfilment of the promise of God in Christ. The Passover feast was a shadow like the manna, the bronze serpent hung on the tree, the water from the rock and other means by which Moses communicated Christ in shadows to the Israelites. The Passover was an annual feast Jesus came to meet. Jesus and his parents yearly participated in it, Luke 2:41-42, “Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast”. The disciples also participated in it since they were Jews. It was an annual feast for the Jews communicating the salvation plan of God over the judgment of sin. This feast was more than just the remembrance of the deliverance of their fathers from death in Egypt, it had a message that the disciples didn’t know about. To them, it was a normal festival to commemorate a past event their fathers experienced in Egypt.
It was during the last Passover feast Jesus had with his disciples that he explained to them the message of the Passover feast. That was not the first time they had the Passover but this was recorded because of the explanation Jesus gave them about the message of the Passover. Our opening text is the explanation or the message of the Passover feast. Jesus explained the cup and the bread as symbolic communication of him. He was the message of the feast. Apostle Paul also affirmed that Jesus is our Passover. The phrase “this do in remembrance of me” was to the people Jesus was at the table with and not all believers. Jesus was saying that they should take the Passover with him as the message or the explanation of the wine and the bread. They had the Passover as a normal feast but at this time Jesus was redirecting their focus to himself. They were therefore to do it with Jesus as the focus. Jesus was not instituting a feast or a practice for all believers. He was not saying that all believers should practice the Passover to remember him.
Jesus also made another significant statement, Luke 22:16, “For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God”. This means the Passover was something to be fulfilled. He also said, Luke 22:18, “For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come”. The kingdom of God came at the resurrection of Christ. The resurrection of Christ, therefore, fulfilled the shadows or symbols of the Passover. The Passover feast celebration is therefore not needed. We have its fulfilment in Christ. We have the reality. It would be ignorance to use shadows to communicate something yet to be fulfilled when you already have the fulfilment.

THE PASSOVER FEAST
HEBREWS 11:28
Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them. (KJV)
From our studies so far, we believe you have come to the persuasion that the scriptures are the testimony of Christ. It talks about Christ in a mystery. This means it talks about Christ in a concealed form or figurative form. It, therefore, requires revelation knowledge to understand the scriptures. We said that though it is not everything written in the scriptures that talks directly about Christ, they were needed to arrive at the message that communicates directly about Christ. The epistles contain the interpretation of the scriptures or the revelation knowledge of the scriptures. We explained how Moses wrote about Christ in many acts during their journey from Egypt. We also explained faith in the context of Hebrews 11. We said that faith in that context is about hope in the faithfulness of God to fulfil his promise of life in Christ. All the activities mentioned in Hebrews 11 were activities inspired by the promise of God in Christ. They did what they did because of what Christ was about to do. It was that faith or substance of things hoped for and evidence of things not seen that made them do what they did. Our faith now is in the fulfilled promise which is in the reality of what Christ has done.
From our opening text, Moses kept or instituted the Passover feast by faith. This means that it was about Christ and the promise of God to be fulfilled in Christ. It was a mode of communicating the salvation plan of God to the Israelites. It was done annually to remember their deliverance from the death of the firstborn in Egypt. The destroyer passed over them because of the blood of the lamb on their doorpost. This talks about salvation from the judgement of sin because of the blood of Jesus to be shed for us. Apostle Paul in explaining what Moses did emphatically said that Jesus is our Passover lamb. 1 Corinthians 5:7-8, “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth”. Jesus our Passover has been sacrificed. He is not being sacrificed or going to be sacrificed.
The sacrifice of Jesus was once and forever. This means faith in Christ is deliverance from the judgment of sin. The day you heard and believed the gospel was the day you were spared from the destroyer who is the devil. The blood of Jesus is our victory over sin and death. We have overcome by the blood. This is the testimony of the believer. Revelation 12:11, “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death”. The believer has passed from death to life. What was needed to spare the lives of the Israelites was the blood on their doorpost, not their conduct or works. Faith in the blood shed is all that is needed for a person to be saved eternally from sin and death.

JESUS IN THE PSALMS
PSALMS 16:10-11
For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. (KJV)
Jesus and the apostles set a standard and pattern by which the Old Testament books should be interpreted. We have been teaching on some of the areas of the Old Testaments books where Christ was revealed. In reading the Old Testament books, especially the words of the prophet, you may be tempted to think they were talking about someone else outside Christ or were referring to their own experiences. This is the same confusion the Ethiopian Eu**ch found himself. He was reading a portion of the book of Isaiah 53:7, “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth”. When the Spirit of God led Philip to him, he asked Philip a very important question. Acts 8:34-35, “And the eu**ch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus”. Though the Ethiopian Eu**ch was reading the scriptures, he did not understand it till Philip explained to him that it was talking about Jesus.
We have many such examples in scriptures where it appears the author was talking about himself or someone else. Till you understand that the message of the scriptures is Christ, you may get confused. In the book of Acts, Brother Luke explained a portion of the book of Psalms in our opening text. Had it not been his explanation, we wouldn’t have known that it was talking about Jesus Christ. Acts 2:25-28, “For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: Therefore, did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance”. Brother Luke said, David as a prophet was talking about the resurrection of Christ.
Acts 2:29-31 “Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption”. The book of Psalms has so many to say about Christ. Most times, David in his experiences prophesied about Christ. Their experiences were the demonstration of the sufferings and glorification of Christ.

THE MESSAGE OF THE PROPHETS
LUKE 24:25-26
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? (KJV)
The scriptures is the revelation of God’s plan of salvation in Christ. Anytime we use the bible to support our ideologies, human philosophy or motivational talks, we will be in error because, it will require us to twist or wrongly interpret the scriptures to be able to support any motivational talk. Apostle Paul told Timothy the effect the knowledge of the scriptures would have on him, 2 Timothy 3:15, “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus”. The scriptures make a person wise in the area of salvation which is by faith in Christ. We have gone through how Moses from Genesis started teaching about God’s plan of salvation and how the elders of the Old Testament by faith in the promise of God did many things. We also taught how the ten commandments were given to Moses to communicate how faith in the promise of God should be expressed and how to relate with each other based on the promise of God when they go to the land of promise.
From our opening text, the prophets also communicated the same message of God’s promise to be fulfilled in Christ. All the prophets spoke of the sufferings of Christ and the glory that should follow. Prophets Isaiah spoke of Christ in many ways, Isaiah 53:4-5, “Surely, he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed”. Jesus referred to the prophet Jeremiah of how Judas would betray him, Matthew 27:9, “Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value”. Ezekiel also spoke of the new man in Christ, Ezekiel 36:26-27, “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them”.
All the other prophets spoke of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ in parts and pieces, others also spoke of the man in Christ and the receiving of God’s Spirit. The Spirit of God comes on the prophets and they receive the message to be spoken. However, they spoke within their level of vocabulary and knowledge. Their words were not verbatim dictation from God. This means that a prophet can say so many things just to communicate a simple message of the sufferings and glory of Christ. The greatness of a prophet was how precise his message was in communicating Christ. John the Baptist was the greatest based on the fact that he was the prophet who introduced Christ in person to Israel.

THE LAW AND THE COMMANDMENTS
MATTHEW 22:37-39
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. (KJV)
We explained that the scriptures is Christocentric. It is the testimony of Christ. Throughout Genesis to Malachi, we see the message of Christ or the plan of God’s salvation being communicated in many forms. From the account of creation through the life of the Patriarchs and the prophets we see the plan of God in Christ being communicated in various forms; the provision of water from the rock, the provision of meat and manna, the dividing of the red sea, the bronze serpent on the tree and others. We also saw how the author of the Book of Hebrews outlined the various lives and events of the Old Testaments saints were by faith in the promise of God. Though it is not everything in the scriptures that may be about Christ or God’s plan of salvation, however, those things were leading towards the message of Christ. This makes the whole bible the message of Christ or God’s plan of life in Christ Jesus.
The deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt to the land of promise was a preaching period for Moses. He communicated Christ or the plan of God’s salvation to the people through so many events and miraculous acts. It took those that had faith in the faithfulness of God to fulfil his promise to enter the land of promise. The others got destroyed by the destroyer in the wilderness, communicating the judgment or destruction that comes by unbelief in the gospel. During their journey, Moses received the ten commandments on Mount Sinai for the Israelites and also wrote various laws for them to obey. The ten commandments is different from the laws of Moses. The ten commandments have no curses or punishments attached but the law of Moses had curses and punishments attached. Moses personally wrote the laws but the ten commandments were received supernaturally on Mount Sinai. From our opening text, Jesus called the ten commandments the Commandments because it was a mode of communication of only two messages. It was communicating the love for God and the love for fellow man.
The first five commandments were about God and the other five were about man. The first five was telling them how to express faith in the faithfulness of God to fulfil his promise and the other five was telling them how to relate with other men based on the promise of God. Moses gave them the laws in addition to the ten commandments due to the hardness of their hearts, Matthew 19:3-8. The laws were supposed to master them till the promise is fulfilled, Galatians 3:23-26. Moses was always not going to be with them. Moses engaged angels in his ministry to the Israelites, Hebrews 2:2. The promise has been fulfilled and for that matter, we don’t live by the ten commandments which was the means by which they expressed faith in the promise yet to be fulfilled. We live by the fruit of the Spirit, Galatians 5:22-23. Faith in Christ and walking in love is obedience to the ten commandments, Romans 13:8-10.

THE PROMISED LAND
NUMBERS 32:11-12
Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me: Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the Lord. (KJV)
We have been explaining the scriptures in the light of Christ. Explaining the scriptures in the light of Christ is not one of the ways to look at the scriptures, but, it is the only way to look at the scriptures or interpret the scriptures rightly. Bible text cannot have multiple interpretations. When a bible text is given to multiple interpretations, it means somebody is telling lies. For example, apostle Paul taught that the rock that brought out water for the Israelites to drink was symbolic of Christ. It would be a false interpretation for somebody to say that the rock was symbolic of a divine transition from fixed hard life to flexible life. This is because the rock is hard and fixed shape and the water is soft and flexible shape. Therefore, sow a seed to strike the hard-fixed life to a life of flowing in multiple blessings. The message of the prophets was the sufferings and glorification of Christ. It will be an error for any preacher to say that the message of the prophets were leadership and dominion in life. The interpretation Jesus Christ and the apostles gave to the scriptures should be the interpretation all the time. We don’t twist the scriptures to suit the circumstances of people.
We said that Moses preached Christ in many forms to the Israelites. The miraculous supply of water, meat and manna were all forms of preaching Christ. The parting of the red sea and their deliverance from Egypt were all forms of telling them about the faithfulness of God to fulfil his promise of redemption or life in Christ. Unfortunately, they did not believe the message of Moses. Our opening text tells us that only two people followed the Lord wholeheartedly. They were the people who entered the promised land God promised to their fathers. The promised land was symbolic of salvation in Christ. Jude said that many were destroyed because of unbelief, Jude 1:5, “I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not”. The salvation from Egypt and all the happenings in the wilderness was the preaching of the promise of God. Entering the promised land was the result of faith in the promise of God.
John also explained another mode Moses preached Christ to the Israelites, John 3:14-15, “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life”. The bronze serpent Moses made and hung on the tree for the Israelites to look at and not die was the preaching of God’s faithfulness to his promise. Jesus is the fulfilment of God’s promise, therefore, when we believe on him, we are saved. This was the message Moses preached to his audience.

BAPTIZED UNTO MOSES
1 CORINTHIANS 10:1-3
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; (KJV)
We have been teaching how a man must see the scriptures as the testimony of Christ. John 5:39, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me”. We must read the scriptures with the understanding of Christ. Till a man sees the scriptures as the message of Christ demonstrated in the lives of people, events and figures of speech, they shall continue to misinterpret the scriptures to teach other things apart from the message the authors wanted to communicate. God’s plan for man has always been life in Christ. This has been the message communicated by Moses and the prophets. Jesus emphatically said that the message of the prophets was about his sufferings and glorification, Luke 24:25-26, “Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?”. What the prophets spoke were about Christ. Apostle Peter also said the prophets prophesied and made inquiries about our salvation, 1 Peter 1:10-11, “Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow”
We said earlier that Moses preached the message of Christ to the Israelites from Egypt. We said that the miraculous water from the rock was the preaching of Christ. They were supposed to believe in the faithfulness of God to fulfil his promise of life in Christ. During their journey from Egypt, they encountered the red sea and Moses miraculously divided the sea for them to walk on dry ground. Apostle Paul called this act baptism unto Moses. This baptism unto Moses is about the preaching of Moses. This act was the message of Christ preached by Moses. They were taken through the preaching of Moses. They were not ignorant of the message preached by Moses. Apostle Paul also said that they all ate the spiritual meat. The miraculous provision of meat was also the preaching of God’s faithfulness to the fulfilment of his promise of redemption.
There was the provision of manna or bread in the wilderness. This was also the preaching of the message of Christ. Jesus said that the bread was symbolic of him. He is the true spiritual bread, John 6:31-33, “Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world”. In all these messages preached by Moses, the fathers were still in unbelief.

THE SPIRITUAL ROCK
1 CORINTHIANS 10:4
And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. (KJV)
We have taught that the message of the scriptures is Christ. Moses and the prophets talked about Christ. The events and activities recorded were means to demonstrate the message of Christ. The message of Christ is God’s salvation through faith. Apostle Paul told Timothy that the scriptures make a person wise in the subject of salvation which is in Christ, 2 Timothy 3:15, “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus”. Jesus emphatically said that Moses wrote about him, John 5:46-47, “For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?”. Jesus taught his disciples about himself from the scriptures, Luke 24:27, “And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself”. Apostle Paul said that the preaching of Jesus Christ or the gospel is according to the revelation of the mystery or the scriptures, Romans 16:25-26.
Therefore, we shall miss the main message or the intent of the writers of the bible when we read the scriptures looking for other things such as motivation theories, financial principles, and political leadership without looking for the message of Christ in the writings of Moses and the prophets. The author of the book of Hebrews made us know that the activities of the elders of the Old Testament were by faith. It was by hope in the faithfulness of God to fulfil his promise that made them do what they did. We said that Moses knew Christ and was a preacher of Christ. From the first chapter of Genesis, he started preaching Christ to the Israelites through various forms and figurative language. He used creation, individuals and activities of men to preach God’s promise or the message of Christ. Moses preached Christ to the Israelites from Egypt in so many ways and instances. From our opening text, we see how Moses preached Christ using the water that came from the rock when they were coming from Egypt.
Apostle Paul explained Moses. He said that the rock was Christ. They all drank the same spiritual drink. Even though this activity was a true event, it was a demonstrative communication of Christ. The drinking water from the rock was not salvation or eternal life but rather it was the preaching of salvation or eternal life in Christ. It was a demonstration of what Christ would do by the offering of life. Though the message of Christ was preached, they did not believe the message. Their unbelief brought judgement to them. This was also demonstrative communication of the result of unbelief in the gospel. This means that in reading Moses’ account of the water from the rock, we must see Christ being communicated. This was the message of that miraculous event.

ACTIVITIES OF FAITH
HEBREWS 11:32-33
And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, (KJV)
We have said many times that bible words must be defined within the context of their usage. The use of the word faith in Hebrews chapter 11 is about the hope in the faithfulness of God to fulfil his promise of life through the death and resurrection of Christ. This was the message of the gospel in the Old Testament. Jesus emphatically said in his explanation of the Old Testament books or the scriptures that his suffering and glorification was the message of Moses and the prophets. Luke 24:25-27, “Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself”. We also said that Abraham proved or tried his faith in the resurrection of Christ by attempting to sacrifice Isaac. It was not the sacrifice of Isaac which was the faith. The faith was in the promise of God but the sacrifice of Isaac was the evidence or proof that he had faith in the promise of God.
We have many activities of the elders of the Old Testament which was by faith in the promise of God. This means that the ages or worlds of the elders were full of visible activities which were influenced by an unseen reality of faith in the promise of God. Hebrews 11:3, “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear”. The word of God in this context was about the promise of God through the words of the prophets. The elders did what they did because they believed in the promise of God. The blessing of Jacob by Isaac was because he believed the promise of God. They mentioned the activities of Moses, Hebrews 11:27-29, “By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible. Through faith he kept the Passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them. By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned”.
We can see that the entire scriptures or the Old Testament books are full of activities that demonstrated the message of Christ. Christ is the message of the scriptures, John 5:39, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me”. Moses and the prophets wrote of Christ using figures of speech, events, people and activities of men. They used the facts of people and events to preach the promise of God and how people believed the promise. Faith in the Old Testament was about Christ. He is the author and finisher of faith.
