Scientists in China are developing the world’s first pregnancy robot, a humanoid machine designed to carry a fetus to term and give birth to a live baby. According to Daily Mail, the robot will be equipped with an artificial womb that mimics natural gestation. Nutrients are delivered through a hose, and the fetus would grow inside a womb-like environment filled with artificial amniotic fluid. The project is led by Dr. Zhang Qifeng, founder of Kaiwa Technology, who claims the technology is already in a “mature stage” and a prototype is expected to launch next year.
The goal is to replicate the entire pregnancy process, from conception to delivery, inside a humanoid robot. While the specifics of fertilization and implantation remain unclear, the concept builds on earlier breakthroughs like the “biobag,” which successfully sustained premature lambs for weeks in an artificial womb.
As reported by Yahoo News, the innovation has sparked intense ethical debate. Critics argue that removing maternal connection is unnatural and potentially harmful, while supporters see it as a way to relieve women from the physical toll of pregnancy and offer new hope for infertile families.
