Subject: Mathematics
Class: Grade 5 / Basic 5
Topic: Lines

1. WHAT IS A LINE?
A line is a straight path that goes on and on in both directions. It has no end.

- A line has no beginning and no end.
- We show a line with arrows on both ends.

Other types:

a) Line Segment: A part of a line with TWO ends. It has a beginning and an end.
Example: A ruler, the edge of your desk.
`A•———————•B`

b) Ray: A line with ONE end. It starts from one point and goes on forever in one direction.
Example: Sunlight.
`A•———————>`

2. TYPES OF LINES
We see these lines every day in our classroom:

i. Parallel Lines: Two lines that never meet, no matter how long you draw them. They are always the same distance apart.
Example: The two long sides of your desk, railway tracks, the lines in your notebook.
———————
———————
ii. Intersecting Lines: Two lines that cross each other at one point.
Example: The letter X, scissors.

/ \
iii. Perpendicular Lines: Two lines that meet and form a square corner (90°). This is a special type of intersecting line.
Example: The corner of your book, where the wall meets the floor.
