TIPS ON HOW TO HELP A SLOW LEARNER IN YOUR CLASS

Educational Psychologists have often classified or categorise all Learners into three major classes namely;
(a) The Fast Learners
(b) The Average Learners
(c) The Slow Learners

However, it is needful for me to state here that not all Schools of Thought agreed with the above categorisation, but the fact remains that all Learners do not learn at the same pace nor have the same intellectual capacity. Hence, the need for the above classification.

Meanwhile, my focus here is how you, as a teacher, can effectively and professionally handle Learners who usually find it difficult to grasp the concept being taught in the class just like their counterparts (mates).

Below are what you can do to help a child with learning disabilities.

1. Let your classes takes place only in a learning-readiness and friendly atmosphere.
2. Have your classes in a quiet environment. You should also try to change environment if need be.
3. You can use "reward" instead of "punishment" to encourage a slow learner in your class.
4. Make the lessons short and always take it slowly with them.
5. Get several instructional materials that resonate with the lessons you are about to teach them.
6. Do not dwell too long on any lesson that is giving a child problem. You can move forward and then come back to such lessons later. Remember that their "attention span" is very low or so limited.
7. Help them learn through consistent study and practice.
8. Do not say derogatory words to describe the child or start to call such a child different names just because the he/she performs poorly.
9. Do not compare such child with others and do not expect the child to work/learn at the same pace with others.

Let me put it to you that it is a professional misconduct for a teacher to openly call his learner a "dullard" or "Slow learner".
Every child is unique in their different ways and all children are to be celebrated.

*STOP ENTIRELY BLAMING THE GOVERNMENT FOR YOUR CHILDREN'S POOR EDUCATION.*
1. *Be a good parent. Regulate the child's leisure for TV, whatsapp, Facebook and more.*
2. *Monitor the progress of your child... Check her/his test and exams grades, be in tune with school teachers and authorities and check their notebooks. This was how our parents ensured our progress.*
3. *Let's bring back the home education challenge. Buy the kids books to read and challenge them to explain the concepts or stories, in the case of novels. Reintroduce reading culture and not WhatsApp and Facebook culture.*
4. *Stop allowing the kids unchecked freedom to do everything they wish. Choose their friends, watch their language, monitor their rooms, bags and dress codes. Control their use of phones and the internet. Their books should be their phones and more.*
*Because we have failed in this direction, our kids have completely lacked the culture of reading, which in turn results to their poor performance in school. This poor performance has made them preys to teachers for either s*x or money, which destroys every good ever desired for them.*
*So be a good parent today and reap the benefit by having successful children tomorrow. Stop blaming government for the educational growth of your kids.*
*There were less funds; few books; poor technology to help in education; not highly educated teachers; few schools but our parents, most of whom were uneducated, stood their grounds to instill learning discipline in us by monitoring our progress.*
