In Islamic marriage (Nikah), a wali (legal guardian) is primarily responsible for representing and looking out for the bride's best interests. If the primary wali is absent, deceased, or ineligible, the responsibility passes down to the next closest qualified male relative. The traditional order of guardianship (from closest to farthest) is strictly maintained as follows:

1. Father
2. Paternal Grandfather (and ascending male paternal ancestors)
3. Full Brother
4. Half-Brother (through the father)
5. Nephew (Sons and further male descendants of full and half-brothers)
6. Paternal Uncle (Father's full brother, then half-brother)
7. Paternal Cousin (Sons of full, then half paternal uncles)
8. Male descendants (e.g., adult son or grandson) — often applicable for a widowed or divorced bride
9. Wali Hakim / Islamic Authority (A Muslim judge, Qadi, or the authorized imam of the local community)
