Principles of Effective leadership
(Insights from Myles Munroe)
PRINCIPLES OF EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP
We need leaders who prioritize people over profit. To create change, you must engage with the issue.
Avoidance only perpetuates the status quo.
We are all born to lead, but not necessarily over others.
Our leadership is meant to be exercised over our unique gifts and talents, and to make a positive impact.
Principles are essential for developing personal leadership. Unlike facts, which can change, principles are constant laws that guarantee success when followed.
God's plan was for us to be leaders, not just followers.
The disconnection from our source of leadership(God) has led many to become followers instead.
Our culture and context often hold us back from realizing our leadership potential. We must recognize and overcome these limitations to become true leaders.
True leadership brings about positive change, improving our environment and the lives of those around us.
If no change occurs, then management, not leadership, is taking place.
Leaders must not support visions that perpetuate social injustice and oppression. Instead, they should empower people, heal, and serve humanity and to ultimately enhance others' lives.
Attitudes of Leadership
1. Leaders don't wait for things to happen; they make things happen. They don't pray for changes; they make changes happen. They don't wait for instructions, and they are not complainers. Complainers are not leaders.
2. Leaders are careful to protect their character, knowing it affects their leadership.
3. Leaders have their heads in the clouds, thinking ahead, while their feet are on the ground. They are in touch with the people's needs and infirmities. They lead from ahead, not beside.
4. Leaders understand shared values and know what people want to achieve.
5. Leaders recognize they can't do it alone and walk with a team.
6. Leaders are mindful of their legacy, knowing it is the life they live. They lead by example, living what they say and demonstrating their instructions.
7. Leadership is everyone's business, not just a select few. Leaders drive people to become more responsible and independent, empowering others to become leaders.
YOU MUST
1. Believe you are designed to lead.
2. Discover yourself.
3. Capture your vision.
4. Share your inspiration.
5. Commit to values and principles you will never violate; set standards you will never sacrifice.
6. Express your passion to people; tell them what you want to change and do.
7. Empower other people.
8. Discipline yourself to protect your purpose.
9. Coordinate resources effectively and manage time.
10. Manage your priorities; otherwise, you will neglect others' priorities.
11. Mentor someone greater than yourself. Leaders produce people, not just buildings or programs. They develop individuals, just as Jesus did.
12. Must understand management, which is a small part of leadership. Management involves delegation, while leadership involves sharing power and giving people responsibility.
Qualifications of Leaders (Using Paul in 1 Timothy 3)
Leaders are overseers, a noble and good desire.
- Must be above reproach, with a personal life that is blameless.
- Must be the husband of one wife, demonstrating that personal life styles are crucial, as leaders lead out of their life, not just their position.
- Must be temperate, slow to anger, as most leaders lose their position due to quick anger; remain calm, even when tempted.
- Must exercise self-control, controlling emotions and maintaining peace, even when tested.
- Must be respectable and consistent in convictions, with uncompromising standards and values.
- Must be hospitable, kind, and gracious to all, even enemies, and willing to listen.
- Must be able to teach and communicate ideas effectively, through learning and reading.
- Must not be given to drunkenness or mental instability, maintaining mental clarity and stability for decision-making.
- Must be gentle, not violent, and not quarrelsome, avoiding arguments and fights.
- Must not be lovers of money, prioritizing people over personal gain, and not sacrificing others for financial motives.
- Must manage their family well, as their children are a key test of their leadership; ensure your best efforts are evident to others.
- Must not be recent converts, as talent alone doesn't qualify for leadership; they must learn and grow before taking on a leadership role.
- Must have a good reputation among those outside their circle.
12 key aspects of leadership:
1. Purpose - You must discover your purpose, you are not just to make a living, discover your sense of destiny.
2. Vision - Have perception of their future, they see a future that is better now and paying the price to go through it.
3. Passion - Have commitments beyond their own safety. Willingness to take the criticism, test and the likes. Passion is the only thing that can withstand the test, opposition. It is a desire that can withstand the threat of death. A passion is not looking for something to live for but for to die for.
4. Conviction - They believe in what they believe is right - you cannot buy their convictions - convictions are lacking among leaders. The moment you flow with the current, you are not a leader. The leaders oppose the convention. They don't follow the crowd. The opposite of conviction is compromise. Leaders are ready to die and go to jail for their convictions. Leaders don't wish to be "liked" they want to be right. Conviction will make you live forever, after death, people will still talk about you.
5. Compassion - Leaders have compassion for the dignity of humans - giving yourself and willing to sacrifice for humanity.
6. Principles - Leaders must live by principles, they have standards they follow - I will not steal, I will not commit adultery, I will not oppress humanity, etc.
7. Values - They have a code of ethics.
8. Plan - Have a clear plan, they plan themselves, they put coordinates in their life, they know where they are going.
9. Persistent - They are committed to getting what they dream, committed to success, their visions, they believe the future and the presence cannot hinder them... they tell the presence that the future is more important. They believe in the hope more than they believe in the environment. Persistent is the foundation of courage. Leaders live in the future, only their body is in the present.
10. Dedication - Dedication is more important than loyalty, faithfulness, and commitment (you can be loyal, faithful, and committed for the wrong reasons). They are dedicated to the task. They won't leave the task half done.
11. Sacrifice - Willingness to suffer for the course of your vision. Leaders are ready to suffer for the course of fulfilling their visions.
12. Accountability - A leader must submit to higher human authority, never trust a person who is not accountable to someone else, never trust a person who cannot be instructed, corrected by someone else. When we live with the awareness to give an account to human authority and divine authority, these will keep a leader humble and fearful. A leader without fear is a dangerous leader. People are in trouble when a leader doesn't fear God. When you fear God, you will respect His image.
