Title: Novel electrolytes for lithium metal batteries

Abstract: Batteries with high energy densities (energy stored per mass or volume) are required to electrify transportation and the grid. Lithium metal batteries can double the energy density of current lithium-ion batteries by replacing the graphite anode with a lithium metal anode. However, lithium metal is highly reactive, electrodeposits in a high surface area dendritic morphology, and continuously decomposes the electrolyte. Fortunately, novel liquid and solid-state electrolytes approaches have shown promise in enabling lithium metal batteries and addressing their challenges. For liquid electrolytes, we have developed novel fluoroether electrolytes that covalently combine two building blocks: ethers for ionic conductivity and fluorinated moieties for electrochemical stability. For solid state, we have developed hybrid solid state electrolytes that consist of polymers for flexible mechanical properties and inorganics for high ion conductivity. For both liquid and solid-state electrolytes, we illustrate the importance of probing ionic solvation, electro(chemical) stability, and their influence on long term battery cycling. Our work illustrates the importance of electrolyte design for next generation lithium-based batteries.
