A Plea for a Brighter Tomorrow: Nigerian Children on Independence Day
By Ekwenwa Kevin
(Co-founder, Childhood Africa & Director, Childhood Africa Foundation School)
====================================
As Nigeria celebrates yet another Independence Day, the streets are filled with the echoes of drums, flags waving proudly in the hands of children, and the colors of green and white illuminating the air with hope.
But in the midst of this celebration, there is a quieter, more poignant sight—a group of Nigerian children, barefoot and silent, each carrying their own symbol of untapped potential.
Some hold a pencil, others a tattered notebook or a chalkboard too worn to be used. They march slowly, faces innocent yet determined, their eyes reflecting dreams that have not yet had the chance to bloom.
These children are not asking for luxury, nor riches; they are asking for a chance—a chance to learn, a chance to grow, a chance to become the doctors, engineers, teachers, and leaders that Nigeria desperately needs.
Their march is not just a part of the Independence Day festivities. It is a reminder to the nation. These children represent the millions across Nigeria who lack access to quality education. Schools without teachers, classrooms without books, communities without hope.
Yet, within them lies the spark of greatness—a potential so immense that it only needs the nurturing hands of proper education to ignite.
As they walk, they look toward the government and leaders, their silent plea more powerful than any speech or celebration. “Give us the tools,” their eyes say, “and we will build the future.”
Nigeria’s future rests not in the monuments of past victories, but in the young hearts of these children. As we commemorate the struggles that brought us freedom, let us not forget the struggles that still exist within our borders—the struggle for knowledge, for equality, and for opportunity.
This Independence Day, let us pledge not just to remember where we came from, but to ensure that every Nigerian child, no matter where they are born, has the chance to hold their future in their hands—not just as a symbol, but as a reality.
Happy Independence Day.
