Grammy-winning South African artist Tyla is facing a new lawsuit over her 2023 global hit "Water." Songwriters Levi De Jonge and Ari Beatroot PenSmith have filed a claim in Manhattan federal court, alleging Tyla's team failed to pay them owed royalties and excluded them from proper songwriting credits. The duo claims they co-wrote the track but were cheated out of earnings from its massive success, including streams, downloads, and sync licenses. This follows a previous settlement with Nigerian artist Tunde Yerim, who claimed "Water" copied elements of his 2017 song "Mujo." Tyla’s team has not yet commented on the new lawsuit.

Choguel Kokalla Maïga, Mali’s former Prime Minister, is under investigation for alleged embezzlement and financial misconduct during his tenure from June 2021 to November 2024. The Office of the Auditor General has submitted documents to the judiciary, highlighting irregularities involving significant sums of public funds. The investigation focuses on two key issues: questionable expenditures tied to a public project inauguration and unjustified mission-related payments amounting to nearly 2 billion CFA francs (approximately $3.3 million USD). Additional allegations include "undue expenditure on staff" from 2020 to 2023, such as nearly €20,000 in phone subscriptions and misallocated equipment like WiFi and computers intended for schools.
Maïga, dismissed by junta leader Colonel Assimi Goïta in November 2024 after criticizing the junta’s lack of transparency on Mali’s delayed transition to democracy, has denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated in a January 2025 New Year’s address. He has not yet commented on the latest judicial developments, which may lead to him being summoned for questioning by Mali’s Supreme Court. The case, dubbed the “Choguel Maïga Files,” reflects ongoing scrutiny of governance under Mali’s military junta, which has been in power since coups in 2020 and 2021
