The novel-Coronavirus ( ) pandemic poses unprecedented challenges to police and other law enforcement agencies worldwide. Perhaps the most pressing problem is to ensure public safety while taking care of officer health and well-being. The challenge is even greater in peacekeeping contexts where both police and public health systems are either weak or wrecked by the years of armed conflict. United Nations police – the United Nations system-wide service provider of policing expertise –continues to provide operational and capacity-building assistance to host-State police and the broader audience of interested agencies.

has developed two sets of guidance documents to a) help the United Nations police components adapt their operations and capacity-building activities in the wake of the crisis and ensure UNPOL officer safety; and b) provide initial advice to the host-State counterparts on planning the police response to the . This interim guidance – based on good practices drawn predominantly from Case Studies and Recommendations published by the Police Executive Research Forum (www.policeforum.org) – was developed in close cooperation with UNDP – UNPOL’s key partner in the Global Focal Point arrangement and will be updated as the situation evolves.
