My fellow Nigerian patternmaking tutors,

Please lets tell our students that there is more to patternmaking than, corsets and bustiers

Ok i know that a lot of us has promised you, that you will be able to create anything, if you learning to draft pattern,

And now that you have taken a class, how has that helped you?

If the reason you want to venture into the business of fashion is to become successful then

DO NOT GO INTO IT AS A HUNGRY PERSON

Because when you are just starting out people will offer you prices that may not benefit the business and because you have to feed yourself, you may not be able to reject it,

And that might be the beginning of the end of the success of the business,

But if your aim for going into the business is to cater for yourself and family then you can venture into it with an empty stomach

I know all this might sound crazy but my point is

If you want to do great at it get another means of feeding yourself especially when you are just starting out it makes it easier to charge your worth

Do you sometimes feel depressed as a TAILOR?? .

This may be why

A lot can be responsible for your depression as a tailor but im going to share a a couple of them with you,

Many times it is always from foundation, yes foundation

A lot of us rushed to establish ourselves, immediately we finished learning because we already have the basic equipments we need for the work,

so you got a shop, pack your sewing equipments in and and you start expecting, customers right away,

That is not a bad thing to do except for the fact that you don't have another source of income, all you depend on is what will be coming from your newly started tailoring business, BEGINNING OF DEPRESSION

and after some months that you've been sleeping at work, you eventually started getting customers, so there is this customer who comes to you to sew a particular style

She asked you for your price and you were like this will cost 10k, and she replied, your price is too expensive even my tailor will charge me not more than 5k for this, i just say lemme, try you and if you collect this amount there are more clothes at home that i want to sew, if i like your work,

And because you dont have any other place to get money from, you reluctantly collected 5k with the believe that it is better than nothing DEADLY MISTAKE,

now all you have to spend on the outfit for a better job 3500, but if you spend that much on it you will be left with a little money, so you decided to improvise to save cost, so that you can at least have 2500 for yourself after the work, CREDIBILITY IN THE MUD

She came for her work, and she liked it and she came back with three other fabrics, with the same PRICE as the first,

You are not okay with the price but she is proving to be a loyal customer and you dont want to lose a customer, that you just got, plus this Time around you will be having a gain of 7500 on the three outfits,

Fast forward she referred you to a lot of other friends and this time around you are getting loads of works, with the same price range, now you have to make 10 outfits in a week and you normal capacity is 5 outfits which means you need to work late nights to meet up,

Now it got to a time when you have 15 outfits in a week and even with nights, you can not meet up,

You were supposed to delegate some of the works to maybe other tailors around but if you give it to them you will be losing money, so you have to do it all by yourself in order to get the money to yourself DISAPPOINTMENT CREPT IN

you prayed and talked to to people for apprentice, and luckily you got 2 apprentice, you quickly taught then the basic so they can start helping you out,

and luckily you they are smart and in matter of weeks you started giving them customer's clothes to sew, PROFESSIONALISM IN THE MUD

And now the good news, you have plenty apprentice because you charge low for apprenticeship, because you were desperately in need of them and you kept hoping they will pay well for their freedom,

This time you are now a big tailor, you no longer sew you just cut clothes for your apprentice, and go out to enjoy yourself, the boys willl do it

And now the boys are busy sewing rubbish for your customers, and they started running away, but you know someone has to bee blamed for that,

That the last set of apprentice will get the blame, their legs are not good, you have started losing customers since they arrived

Customers keeps going, you tried all you can to retain customer, except using you apprentice to sew their outfits, without checking them before delivery,

And as work no dey flow as e dey flow before again, your apprentice started leaving one by one to go to another place, and this time around you realize you had to sew again but the thing no dey your body again,

There is this new tailor that charges 3 times your normal price, and you started asking your how did this person do it, but you can not go to the person and learn how he does it because, he met you in the neighborhood, and you see him as a threat, and a rival,

But you start thinking why your own life has to be like this, the other tailor is not even as good as you are

The other person does not even spends up to a year before he bought a car, you dont know where the money for the car comes from you you assumed it was from the job,

But here you are doing it for years and you haven't bought an okada DEPRESSION SETS IN

If you can retrace your steps from the beginning, to where you are you can tell where the problem is coming from and you xan make amends,

Tailoring is sweet, dont give up

Yes i know I'm not a fashion business coach I'm a tailor and there is something i will love to remind you,

focusing on packaging, having the most Instagram worthy content and ads for your brand it is very important not to forget the

of the product itself

Do not be carried away by packaging and leave behind the product you are packaging,

Because at the end of the day the product is the most important

You dont want a scenery where customers will end up disappointed because you product finaly isn't worth the hype

Even you will not be happy if you spend 100k on something you can get for 10k just because it was packaged well for you,

You definitely will be underwhelmed maybe even more displeased because of the extra that the packaging promised

Focus on perfecting your finishing,

Sourcing for quality materials for your work

And constantly improving your skills

THE SECRET OF THE AGES ARE LOCKED IN BOOKS ,

if have read a couple of fashion books, pattern making books and i can confirm the the quote is indeed true,

But the problem with our current generation is that we don't really have time for it anymore,

Yes i know we have YouTube channel and other platforms to learn from, but trust me they can not be compared to books,

An author who has spent so many years of his life learning, practicing, made a lot of mistakes, such person has gained so much experience,

And then decides to document everything inform of books for others to learn from,

Trust me that's huge sacrifice, but the generation that those sacrifices are being made for does not see it as a thing,

Lemme tell you this for free, most YouTube channels we watch are teach us stuffs we can grab quickly, and thats why whenever we encounter any problem, we don't usually know where it comes from,

Because a lot id hidden, those people that taught us do not go in depth, they just scratched the surface for us,

Because they know you wont have they time to watch if they get serious 😊😊

If you really want to gain a lot in your fashion business, try out a book today get someone to put you through and you will be suprised at your results

Learning is a continuous process. This is one thing you must do if you want to make it big in your business. There are new and updated information every day. If you don't come to fact with this, you will end up stuck in one position.
