Space Fight Against Terrorism in Nigeria: A Comprehensive Call to Action
Written by Awotayo Olagoke from Osogbo
The fight against terrorism, especially in the northern parts of the country, has been very burdensome for Nigeria. Terrorist groups have risen, and national security has been threatened; they have brought about very devastating economic and social effects. With the military stepping up operations, such as the December 25, 2024, airstrike against terrorist groups in Sokoto State, it becomes very imperative that Nigerians be alerted and understood the general implications of harbouring terrorists in their midst. The effects of terrorism in Nigeria have been so devastating: countless lives lost, families displaced, and livelihoods destroyed. Quite a number of thriving villages have been turned into battlegrounds as the innocent civilian population finds itself caught in the crossfire. This has led to a culture of pervasive violence, leading to a sharp decline in economic activities and bringing about a vicious cycle of poverty and instability. The recent airstrike by the military shows it is serious about disbanding terrorist groups and bringing peace to the troubled areas, but most of the success is attributed to the cooperation of local communities. Nigeriens should understand that giving shelter or assistance to terrorist groups is not only putting their lives in danger but also making them accomplices in continuing violence. It is worth noting that the responsibility to fight against terrorism goes beyond the military. Communities must be actively involved in this struggle. Where there are awareness campaigns and educational efforts, they will empower citizens to recognise and report suspicious activities and inculcate the tradition of vigilance within those societies, denying sanctuary in villages to terrorists. Third, the government must address these communities constructively with grievances met and needs identified in their favor. Addressing better living standards and means of employment is, at large, necessary in creating diminished attraction for extremist ideals. By improving the quality of life, the government can reduce the attraction to joining terrorist groups, thus making the recruitment efforts of terrorist groups less effective. This shows that the war on terror is not solely a military operation but a social movement. The fight against terrorism in Nigeria requires a clear and multi-dimensional front. As much as the military is centrally placed to fight terrorist threats, local communities' cooperation and vigilance are equally important. The recent airstrike in Sokoto State has shown that the Nigerian military can engage terrorist elements with precision. However, government officials should desist from making any hasty statement that may mar the appreciation of the ex*****on of military operations. Only with a realisation of the dangers of harbouring terrorism, together, can Nigerians guarantee a safe and prosperous future. It will require a collective effort to move beyond those challenges brought about by terrorism and to rebuild the social fabric of the nation.
