UNIOSUN Lecturer Wins DAAD Fellowship, Joins University of Stuttgart for Global Sustainability Research
A lecturer in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Osun State University and Deputy Director of the University’s Global Affairs and Sustainable Development Institute (GASDI), Dr Samson Olanrewaju, has been awarded the highly competitive German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Fellowship, securing a research placement at the University of Stuttgart, Germany.
According to a statement issued by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, Dr Olanrewaju earned the prestigious fellowship under the DAAD Global Research Programme, an initiative that brings together scholars from the Global North and South to advance cutting-edge research, leadership and policy solutions in environmental sustainability.
The statement noted that, under the fellowship, Dr Olanrewaju will collaborate with renowned sustainability scholar, Professor Astrid Ley, at the University of Stuttgart from September to December 2026, where he will undertake advanced research aimed at addressing contemporary environmental and sustainable development challenges.
Congratulating the scholar on the achievement, the Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, described the fellowship as another testament to the University’s growing reputation as a hub for globally competitive research, innovation and academic excellence.
He said the international recognition reflects the calibre of scholars at UNIOSUN and the University’s sustained investment in research, global partnerships and capacity building.
“This remarkable accomplishment is a source of pride to the entire University community. It demonstrates the quality of scholarship that thrives at Osun State University and further validates our commitment to producing academics whose research addresses global challenges while contributing to sustainable development.
“We are delighted that another member of our academic community has earned international recognition through this prestigious fellowship. We are confident that Dr Olanrewaju will serve as an outstanding ambassador of the University and Nigeria throughout the programme,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

UNIOSUN Lecturer Bags Prestigious Harvard Global Health Fellowship
The Acting Head of the Department of Animal and Environmental Biology at Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Dr Olabanji Ahmed Surakat, has been admitted into the prestigious Takemi Fellowship in International Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Harvard University, United States, for the 2026–2027 fellowship year.
The fellowship is one of Harvard University's flagship international programmes, attracting accomplished scholars, researchers and public health professionals from across the world to advance research, leadership and policy on critical global health issues.
In a statement issued by the University's Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, Dr Surakat was described as an accomplished public health parasitologist and entomologist whose admission followed his remarkable contributions to implementation and operational research on neglected tropical diseases and malaria.
According to the statement, his research has contributed significantly to onchocerciasis elimination programmes in Nigeria, Rwanda, Ghana, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Ethiopia, with particular emphasis on community-based health interventions.
As a Takemi Fellow, Dr Surakat will participate in high-level seminars, receive mentorship from leading global health experts and collaborate with an international network of researchers on cutting-edge public health initiatives. The fellowship will be undertaken remotely, enabling him to continue his teaching, research and administrative responsibilities at UNIOSUN while engaging with one of the world's foremost institutions of public health.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, described the feat as another milestone in the University's growing record of international academic recognition.
He congratulated Dr Surakat on the achievement, noting that it reflects the quality of scholarship at UNIOSUN and the institution's unwavering commitment to producing globally competitive academics whose research addresses pressing societal challenges.
"The latest recognition further reinforces UNIOSUN's position as a centre of research excellence and international relevance. It also demonstrates that our academics are making meaningful contributions to knowledge production and policy development at the highest global level," the Vice-Chancellor said.
Professor Adebooye expressed confidence that the fellowship would strengthen the University's international collaborations, enrich its research ecosystem and create new opportunities for knowledge exchange and capacity building in public health and related disciplines.

UNIOSUN Ranks Among Nigeria’s Top 20 Universities, Emerges Third-Best State University
Osun State University has recorded another major milestone in its pursuit of academic excellence, emerging among Nigeria’s top 20 universities in the July 2026 edition of the globally recognised Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.
The latest ranking places UNIOSUN 19th among the 312 universities in Nigeria, third among the country’s 68 state-owned universities, and 137th out of 2,390 universities across Africa, underscoring the institution’s remarkable rise as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing and most competitive public universities.
The ranking highlights the University’s growing academic reputation, enhanced research visibility and expanding digital presence, further reinforcing its position as a leading state-owned institution committed to global standards of teaching, research and innovation.
