*UNIOSUN Biotechnology Student Secures International Research Grant for Lassa Fever Detection Innovation*

A 400-level Biotechnology student of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Philip Ayomide Ogundele, has secured an international research grant worth 950 US dollars from Sigma Xi – The Scientific Research Honor Society for an innovative project aimed at improving Lassa fever detection and surveillance.

According to a statement issued by the University Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, the grant was awarded to support Ogundele’s research proposal titled, “Wearable Biosensor Prototype for the Detection and Surveillance of Lassa Fever Infection in Low-Resource Settings.”

The project is designed to explore innovative approaches to disease monitoring and early detection, particularly in resource-constrained environments where access to healthcare facilities and diagnostic tools remains limited.

The development marks another milestone for the university in its efforts to promote research, innovation and global academic engagement among students.

Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR), established in 1922, is an internationally recognised programme that supports undergraduate and postgraduate students in conducting scientific research and advancing innovative ideas with societal relevance.

Reacting to the achievement, the Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, described the award as a reflection of the institution’s commitment to quality education, research excellence and student development.

He said, “This international recognition further reflects our commitment to producing graduates and scholars equipped with the capacity to address real-life challenges through research, innovation and knowledge-driven solutions.

“We are proud of Philip Ayomide Ogundele for this remarkable feat, which demonstrates the immense potential of our students when provided with the right academic environment and support.”

The Vice-Chancellor added that the university would continue to strengthen initiatives that encourage innovation, research and academic excellence among its students and staff.

The latest achievement adds to the growing record of research accomplishments by members of the university community and underscores UNIOSUN’s increasing presence in global academic and research circles.

UNIOSUN Celebrates 100% Success in Latest NUC Accreditation

Osun State University has recorded another major academic milestone as the National Universities Commission (NUC) granted full accreditation status to all the 29 academic programmes presented by the institution during the October/November 2025 accreditation exercise.

In a statement issued by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, the development was described as a further affirmation of the institution’s growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s fastest-rising and academically stable universities under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye.

The approval was conveyed in an official communication signed by the NUC Director of Accreditation, Engr. Abraham Chundusu, on behalf of the Commission’s Executive Secretary, following a comprehensive accreditation exercise conducted across various disciplines in the University.

The accredited programmes cut across major academic fields, including Administration and Management, Allied Health Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Computing, Education, Sciences, and Social Sciences.

The latest achievement has been widely celebrated within and outside the University community as a strong endorsement of the quality of academic programmes, modern facilities, qualified manpower, research capacity, and stable academic environment at Osun State University.

Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebooye, expressed appreciation to the NUC for the confidence reposed in the institution, noting that the 100 per cent success recorded by the University reflects years of strategic planning, quality assurance, and sustained investment in academic excellence.

According to him, all the programmes presented for accreditation secured full accreditation status, describing the feat as another milestone in the University’s journey towards global relevance and excellence.

Professor Adebooye attributed the achievement to the collective commitment of staff, students, the Governing Council, alumni, and other stakeholders, as well as the continuous support of the Osun State Government under the leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

He stated that the University administration has continued to prioritise quality teaching, cutting-edge research, infrastructural development, digital innovation, and uninterrupted academic activities, all of which contributed significantly to the successful outcome of the accreditation exercise.

Since assuming office, Professor Adebooye’s administration has witnessed remarkable progress in programme expansion, infrastructure development, research output, staff development, and institutional visibility, with the University consistently earning recognition for academic stability and excellence.

The latest accreditation success is expected to further strengthen the value of certificates awarded by the institution and consolidate its position as a preferred destination for quality university education in Nigeria.
