Managing Yourself Before Managing a Class
Let’s talk about something many teachers don’t like to admit…
Before you can manage a class, you must first manage yourself.
Teaching is not just “lesson plan, scheme and workbook.”
Teaching is emotional labour.
And the truth is, some teachers are academically sound…
but emotionally unstable.
1. Whatever you haven’t managed inside will manage you in front of your learners.
If you get angry easily…
If small provocation makes you overreact…
If a child’s behaviour changes your entire mood…
My dear, it’s not the child, it’s your emotional capacity.
Children are naturally impulsive.
They will test you.
They will frustrate you.
They will repeat the same behaviour 50 times.
Your emotional intelligence is what separates:
reaction from response
shouting from correction
anger from discipline
A teacher’s emotional balance sets the emotional temperature of the class.
2. Not Every Behavior Requires Shouting
One day, you’ll realize most classroom clashes could have been solved with:
eye contact
calm tone
redirection
humour
silence
But when a teacher is not in control of their emotions, everything becomes a battle.
Every noise becomes an insult.
Every mistake becomes disrespect.
Every correction becomes punishment.
You can’t teach effectively if you’re always reacting.
3. Your Peace Affects Their Performance
Children feel your mood before they hear your words.
If you come into class tense, irritated, or overwhelmed…
the atmosphere shifts instantly.
A calm teacher calms a class.
A chaotic teacher creates chaos.
Your emotional intelligence is not just for you, it shapes how children:
learn
trust
participate
behave
express themselves
Some classes are noisy not because the children are stubborn…
but because the teacher’s energy is scattered.
4. Emotional Intelligence Is Not Weakness
Some teachers believe:
“If I don’t shout, they won’t hear me.”
No.
If you don’t have emotional structure, they won’t respect you.
A teacher who is calm, firm, confident, and self-aware commands more respect than the one shouting like a town crier.
Emotional intelligence is:
firmness without aggression
empathy without losing boundaries
calmness without being passive
structure without being harsh
This is the real power of a classroom leader.
5. Separate the Child From the Behaviour
A child makes a mistake, it doesn’t mean the child is a mistake.
A child lies once, it doesn’t make them a “liar.”
A child acts out, it may be hunger, fear, tiredness, or confusion.
Emotionally intelligent teachers don’t label children.
They correct behaviour while preserving identity.
This is how children grow emotionally safe and academically confident.
6. Understand Your Triggers
Every teacher has triggers.
Maybe it’s noise.
Maybe it’s disrespect.
Maybe it’s stubbornness.
Maybe it’s attitudes that remind you of past experiences.
But you must know yourself well enough to say:
“This behavior is stressing me, but I won’t let it control me.”
Self-awareness is emotional intelligence in action.
7. Protect Your Peace Outside the Classroom
A teacher who is:
exhausted
overwhelmed
stressed
unhappy
unsupported
…can hardly be emotionally stable in class.
Rest is not laziness.
It is refueling.
Your emotional health outside the classroom decides your emotional strength inside it.
DEAR TEACHERS,
You cannot organise children when your mind is disorganised.
You cannot teach emotional regulation when you don’t practice it.
Emotional intelligence is not a luxury, it is the backbone of teaching.
Before you manage the class, manage yourself.
Because the teacher’s emotional temperature sets the tone for the entire learning experience.
