We just celebrated World Teachers’ Day, and it was heartwarming to see pictures, videos, and beautiful write-ups from parents, students, and well-meaning individuals appreciating teachers for their time, effort, and impact.

But if we’re being honest, there’s a part of this celebration that stings a little...

Isn’t it funny how those who shape destinies and build the futureare often the most underpaid and undervalued* in our society?

A teacher will teach with passion, strength, and genuine care… only to go home with peanuts called “salary.”
Some are even maltreated, owed salaries, and still expected to smile through it all.

How do we celebrate teachers with words but not match it with action?

The Nigerian government needs to intentionally revisit teachers’ welfare. Because without teachers, there are no doctors, engineers, leaders not even presidents.

A nation that ignores its teachers is a nation that mortgages its future.

Let’s move beyond praises once a year, and start pushing for real change because teachers deserve more.

The Story Behind These Pictures- A life lesson

That morning started like every other I had my usual routine of preparing to conduct morning assembly with the pupils as a diction coach.
I woke up early, cooked, bathed, and packed up with my baby, determined to leave home on time.

But just as I was stepping out, the weather changed.
Thu nder. Lightñing.
And then... the rain poured.

In my heart, I panicked.
All my effort to beat time that morning? Just like that washed away.

I stood there, disappointed and frustrated. But after a while, I stepped onto the veranda to check if the rain had stopped and without thinking, my hand swiped to camera mode.

Something just whispered, “Take some pictures.”

So I did.

And guess what? As I took those shots, my mood began to lift.
The disappointment faded. I smiled.
And those random pictures became some of my favourite shots ever.

Later that day, I even got a free ride that helped me save on transport!

And that’s just how life is sometimes what starts off rough can still turn out beautiful.

Don’t let a gloomy start define your day.
Sometimes, the rain is just making room for a better ending.

From phonics to purpose, every lesson, every word, every child matters.

This was me breaking down the /æ/ sound for my pupils words like bag, fan, pan, fat may seem simple, but this is where literacy begins.

Every teacher deserves to be celebrated for the countless hours, the sacrifices, and the love we pour into the future.
