UNIMED Appoints Osho, Oyeyemi as Deputy Vice-Chancellors

The Senate of University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, has elected Professors Patrick Osho and Oyetunde Oyeyemi as Deputy Vice-Chancellors of the institution.
Professor Osho was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration and Clinical Sciences, while Professor Oyeyemi emerged as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic.

Emeritus Prof. Friday Okonofua, the pioneering Vice-Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) in Ondo State, emphasized the role of specialized medical universities as a transformative model for enhancing higher education and healthcare delivery in Nigeria. He made these remarks during his inaugural public lecture for the Faculty of Clinical Sciences at UNIMED, titled "The Future of Specialised Medical Universities in Nigeria: Progress, Challenges and Future Directions."

Okonofua highlighted that specialized medical institutions can effectively address critical gaps in Nigeria's healthcare workforce and contribute significantly to national growth. He pointed out that the sustainability of these institutions relies on their ability to integrate specialized training with a broader academic framework, adopt innovative practices, and uphold global standards. With adequate backing from stakeholders and the government, he believes specialized medical universities are poised to significantly influence the future of healthcare in Nigeria and beyond.

In response, Prof. Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED, underscored the strategic importance of specialized medical universities in enhancing healthcare delivery through innovation, interdisciplinary research, and the training of skilled professionals. She stressed the need for such institutions to remain adaptable, globally connected, and responsive to societal demands, praising Okonofua for establishing a strong foundation for UNIMED's growth.

Prof. Oluseyi Adejumo, Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, noted that Nigeria has historically relied on conventional universities for healthcare training. He pointed out the challenges faced by these institutions, including overcrowded curricula and inadequate facilities, further demonstrating the necessity for specialized medical universities.

The lecture attracted prominent figures, including former Ondo State Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, various academics, medical professionals, and other stakeholders from the health sector.
