Humongous is an informal way of saying extraordinarily large or huge. Some things are more than huge—they’re humongous. The word is most often applied to physical objects whose size makes you marvel with awe. Blue whales are humongous. Skyscrapers are humongous.

But it can also be applied to intangible things, as in 'With all the champagne and caviar that we ordered, the bill for dinner is going to be humongous.'

1. Understand the Test Dynamics

IELTS is not your regular English exam, hence, you need to comprehend the system.

Identify the different modules, observe the question pattern for each of them, take note of their durations and distinguish the approach to apply for each question type.

Clarity about these dynamics is the foundation you need to build every other preparation process on.

2. Develop English Proficiency Skills

Discovering hacks and tricks can be an exciting shortcut to consider, but the problem with them is how fleeting they are. If you are not skilled at something, no hack can get you sustainable results.

The key to high band scores in IELTS is simply in improving your skills. Start by analyzing your strengths and weaknesses, so you can know where to focus more effort.

3 Silent Skills every IELTS Test-taker must master. These are not really English Proficiency Skills but your language skills depend on them to really count.

••• Attention to Details. If you get distracted easily, your chances of passing IELTS are slim. This is especially true for the listening test where the audio keeps going on an on and won't be replayed if you missed the answer. The Reading Test is also layered with lots of distracters that are so close to the real answer. Always pay attention.

••• Creative Thinking. What do you do if you're asked to write or talk about something you've never heard or experienced before, what do you do? Tell them to ask something else or just put out whatever comes to mind? You have to deploy your creativity in these situations.

••• Time Management. No matter how proficient you are in English, you must be able to display it within a given timeframe. If you're slow or you waste time on unnecessary things, you won't finish and that limits your score.

By all means, develop your language skills, but don't forget to improve on these grey areas as well.
