04/03/2023

Good evening. UNN has 10 faculties. There is the ever unending debate over which faculty has the largest number. Those in Nsukka campus can argue for Africa. That is why only the quiet departments are in Enugu campus. Law is in Enugu campus. This mean you will have no business with Nsukka campus. First year medical students will start first year in Nsukka. Then from second year they will move to UNEC, that's Enugu. Same with Radiography and Anatomy. They will start in Nsukka then move to Enugu campus from second year. Law, Banking and Finance, all business courses are in Enugu campus. You will have no business whatsoever with Nsukka.

This is for you to know yourself and your friends. The distance between Nsukka and Enugu campus will cover one hour and 30 minutes. Transport cost is now N1500 and above.

So, as a newly admitted student of UNN, after creating your student portal and an acceptance fee paid, you have to wait small for the official school fee to be released. It is advisable you stay in the hostel no matter how dilapidated the hostel is. This is because hostels are a stone through from the department unlike when you will trek from Sambisa forest to Zango Kataf because you choose to stay off campus. Keep your big boy and big girl till your second year and above.
UNN Hostel Fees
Here is how much UNN hostel fees are;

Male Hostel – ₦‎20,000
Female Hostel – ₦‎25,000
Okeke Hostel – ₦‎35,000
Undergraduate Nursing Mother at E Block – ₦‎35,000
Hostel Levy = ₦‎2,000
Almanac = N600
Environmental Levy = ₦‎2,500

You need to know some slangs too associated with UNN.

When you hear *la cram, la pour, la pass, la forget* it means that students only read to pass, not to understand or know.
You will hear of *Bermuda rooms*. These are the rooms in the hostel next to the toilet. When applying for hostel, avoid these rooms. When someone eats porridge beans mixed with shawarma with garden egg sauce, and a sour plate of moi moi from mama put, the person gets to release all that in the toilet. For you staying next to the toilet, there is no sound of 'bratatata' and 'bragagaga' that you will not hear. Omo, e red. Stay away from Bermuda rooms.
Let's end there for now. I shall discuss that in detail when writing about the various hostels in UNN. The only advantage the Bermuda rooms have over other rooms is that it has more space and is bigger than others.

Now let us talk about something existentially crucial.

Now that you have paid acceptance fee, try to read the things you will likely face in your first year. When you read ahead, it helps you and the lecturer. Most of you will find what they teach in the university shocking. It is not the ephemeral and otiose algebra.
It is another multiverse of learning for those in a good department. Though some people will be chewing gum till they graduate and will not know why they went to school.

Now listen, every newly admitted student irrespective of department will take the following courses in first year.

GSP101
GSP111
GSP stands for general studies programme. It is general. It applies to every first year student.
GSP101 is English. This is back to elementary English of parts and figures of speech. As time goes on you face morphology, lexicography, phonetics and phonology and more.
GSP111 is for everyone too. The course is Use of Library. This course teaches you how to use the library and how to conduct your research whether online or offline.

These are the courses that AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE students will offer in first semester:
Agric

GSP101
GSP111
AGR101 Biomathematics
BIO151- Introduction to Biology
MATHS111- Introduction to Basic Mathematics
CHEM101- Introduction to Chemistry
CHEM171- Practical Chemistry.
Bio151 is not for Engineering students. Same with Physical Science faculty students. Though very few courses take the course as an elective.

There are 3 categories of courses that you will offer or take in UNN.
1. Core subjects. These are the basic departmental courses that you will take.
2. Elective
They are optional. You will be given like 5 courses for you to pick one, two or three at a time. You will not take all.
3. GSP courses. These are courses outside your department courses that you will add and complete before you finish your programme.
