🌍 World Environment Day 2026: UNN Launches 1,000-Tree Planting Initiative
The Department of Geography & Environmental Sustainability, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), joins the global community in commemorating World Environment Day 2026 with pride and renewed commitment to environmental stewardship. On Friday, June 5, 2026, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka commenced a landmark environmental intervention: the planting of 1,000 trees across the Nsukka campus. This initiative represents a significant step toward strengthening ecological resilience, improving campus aesthetics, and promoting long-term sustainability within the university community.
The programme is being led by the University Taskforce on Environment, chaired by Prof. Chukwuedozie K. Ajaero (Professor of Demography, Social Epidemiology, and Population–Environment Linkages), in collaboration with T.R.E.E. Initiatives, Plogging Nigeria, the Rotaract Club UNN, and the IMPACT-ED Project.
According to Prof. Ajaero, the initiative is designed to:
“Reduce CO₂ emissions, enhance biodiversity, and foster a lasting culture of environmental responsibility within the university community. Beyond its ecological benefits, the project will contribute to a greener and healthier campus environment, enriching the experience of both staff and students.”
The Department commends this initiative that marks an important milestone in advancing a greener, healthier, and more environmentally responsible University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
