Saheed Azeez, a Yoruba software developer, is behind YarnGPT, a Nigerian-built artificial intelligence model developed to generate natural speech in Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo and Nigerian-accented English.
The innovation is designed to support indigenous languages through speech technology, allowing users to convert text into natural-sounding audio in local languages while expanding access to digital content.
In June 2026, Nigerian technology company Bluechip Technologies announced the acquisition of YarnGPT, describing the move as part of its efforts to strengthen locally developed artificial intelligence solutions for African languages.
Azeez's work has been recognised as one of the notable contributions to advancing indigenous language technology, demonstrating how Yoruba and other Nigerian languages are increasingly finding relevance in the evolving AI landscape.
