Education: My SoulMate
(A Poem Composed by a Student of Zion Academy, Minna)
I am married to Education
Pregnant for knowledge
By God's grace
i will give birth to success
which will be my footpath
I will swim in rivers of blessing
Eat in prosperity
Education, my best legacy
The pride of being a human being
Through education;
Nations will come from me;
I shall mother riches
And Dance in milk and Honey.
Make Education your legacy!

Why is it Important for Children to Play Sports in School?
In today’s hectic, technological world, children and parents alike follow a rigid structure when it comes to education. Understandably, many parents focus on the education of their children, but few consider their physical and mental health.
In order to promote an active lifestyle, positive mindset and stability, sport is one of the best activities for children. Various studies have shown that children who actively participate in sports, both in school and at home, perform better at school. In many cases, they are able to achieve higher grades, as spending their leisure time participating in physical activity on outdoor play equipment not only keeps their bodies active, but also sharpens their minds and helps them stay focused.
5 Reasons Why Sports are Essential for Children:
1. Motivation and Ambition
Besides the obvious advantages of physical and mental fitness, there are many other benefits of sport – one of which is that sports make children more enthusiastic. By playing sports, children become more ambitious in life, actively working towards achieving their goals. Playing sports alongside studying gives children more courage and motivation to become a successful and active individual.
2. Socialisation
Studies have found that kids who play more sports are particularly social both in and outside of school. They have more friends and thus interact quite well with teachers, as well as their fellow students. On the other hand, children who don’t play sports tend to have lower levels of confidence compared to those who play regularly. Therefore, it’s the responsibility of parents and teachers to encourage children to regularly participate in sports.
3. Relieves Stress and Spreads Happiness
Physical activity is a great way to relieve stress and promote a healthier and more active lifestyle. While playing sports, children unite and engage with their friends, relaxing and enjoying their leisure time. Ultimately, this helps them become happier and stress-free.
4. Builds Creativity and Critical Thinking
Studies have also found that children who play sports regularly are more creative. They think outside the box and both learn and implement newer skills and abilities more frequently than their less sporty counterparts. Entrepreneurship, innovation, invention, and critique are just a few of the things that are possible if children are physically energetic.
5. Raises Character and Moral Values
Parents and teachers should not only encourage children to focus on studies; it’s their utmost responsibility to build the character of children and teach them the importance of morality and integrity. Therefore, sport is one such medium that acts as a catalyst – it helps to boost children’s moral values. They become active members of society as sport helps them learn to implement teamwork, sportsmanship and respect for others. Children learn to volunteer their time for the sake of humanity when they passionately participate in sporting events and activities.

Improving your reading skills
Have a clear focus for your reading.
Set your reading goals.
Where possible, survey the text before you spend the time and effort involved in more detailed reading.
Scan and skim to select the text for more detailed reading. Scan and skim after detailed reading to reinforce your understanding.
Use a form of note taking whilst reading in detail, to keep you concentrating, aid understanding and provide you with a record of your reading.
Using clear reading goals and a variety of reading skills is more important than increasing your reading speed.

21 Parenting Tips for the 21st Century Parents
The birth of new technologies in the 20th Century was supposed to make our lives easier and provide more time for family, personal interests, or just to relax. Instead, the pace has picked up. Work demands have become more hectic. Our schedules are overloaded. But our children – – not much has changed!
Sure, kids today can operate smartphones and computers long before they can even read, but many of their most basic needs have been the same since the dawn of time. As parents, we need to recognize that although children are far more technologically advanced than they were just two decades ago, their emotional needs have stayed relatively the same.
But they’ve had many of the same needs for generations. If you want to improve your parenting skills in our fast paced culture, but are not sure where to begin, here are 21 tips that will help you do just that:
1. Tell your children that you love them. Don’t assume they know it. Make it a priority every day. You can even turn this into a playful game by asking your child, “Has anyone told you that they love you today?” Then be sure to tell them all the special reasons why you love them.
2. Eat dinner as a family as much as possible. Children learn valuable communication skills and life-lessons around the dinner table. Put your phone down and ask meaningful questions. This might be hard at first, but you can do it! It’s worth the sacrifice.
3. Pick your child up and hug her when they asks. There may come a day when they stops asking and you’ll find that you’d give anything just to hold them in your arms again.
4. Ask questions. Get to know your child. You might be surprised by what they’re thinking.
5. If you must choose work over time with your child, let it be an anomaly. Work will likely always be there, your children will not.
6. Model kindness. It’s rapidly becoming a lost practice in the world today. Model the type of characteristics you hope to see in your children. They are watching you whether you like it or not, so set a good example.
7. When your child asks you any bad habit. Stop! What they’re really asking is for you to be there for them later.
8. When a child offers you a gift, no matter how seemingly insignificant to you, accept it with genuine gratitude. They may be offering you the best they have to give.
9. Always rescue your child from danger, whether real or perceived . . . because it’s always good to be a hero!
10. If you have to discipline, remember that the goal is to modify behavior, not hurt them. Never discipline when you are angry.
11. Take your kids on dates. Model the qualities you hope they’ll find in a future mate. Set the bar high and encourage them to never settle for a relationship.
12. Pay attention when your kids asks you to watch them. They want more than just your attention; they want to know that you value them more than your smartphones or work.
13. Children thrive with structure. Find a schedule that works best for your child and stick to it.
14. Never follow praises with negativity. Your child is likely to remember the failure rather than the accomplishment.
15. Play games that interest your child, not ones that are most convenient for you. This is a great way to identify what excites your child’s imagination.
16. Children will test the boundaries you set. Stay consistent. If they don’t respect your authority when they are young, they will have difficulty respecting any authority later in life.
17. You play the greatest role in creating confidence and security in your child. Make a daily effort to identify the positive qualities that set your child apart from all other children. Remind them of these attributes. They need to know that you’ll love them regardless of their mistakes.
18. Put your kids to bed on time. They need the sleep and you need time to recharge your batteries. Create a bedtime routine and stick to it.
19. Learn your child’s love language and use it to demonstrate your love everyday. (Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, Physical Touch).
20. Don’t make comparisons between your children. They’ll get enough of that from society; there’s no place for it in the home.
21. Cherish ever day with your children. Their life is your gift!
Conclusion
Being a parent is a difficult job. No one ever said it was easy. In a blink of an eye, the growing years are gone and you’ll forget about the sleepless nights, the temper tantrums, and all the other challenges that parenting brings and you’ll long for times when your child falls asleep in your arms, splashes all the water from the bathtub, and sings without any inhibitions.
So choose to enjoy these times. Both you and your child will be better off if you do.
