DEMOCRACY DAY MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN BENUE SUBEB, DR. GRACE ADAGBA TO HIS EXCELLENCY, REV. FR. DR. HYACINTH IORMEM ALIA, THE EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF BENUE STATE

On behalf of the Management and Staff of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), I heartily congratulate Your Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

Democracy Day is a solemn reminder of our collective commitment to the ideals of good governance, accountability, inclusiveness, and service to the people. It is also an avenue to celebrate visionary leadership and acknowledge the remarkable progress that has been recorded under your administration in advancing the welfare and prosperity of the people of Benue State.

Over the past three years, your administration has continued to deliver tangible dividends of democracy across critical sectors of the state's economy. Through strategic investments in infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, security, youth empowerment, and social development, you have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life of the people and restoring public confidence in governance. Your purposeful leadership has inspired hope, strengthened institutions, and laid a solid foundation for sustainable growth and development.

In the basic education sector, Your Excellency's interventions have been transformational. Under your leadership, 422 classroom blocks have been constructed and renovated across basic schools consequently improving enrolment. The recruitment of 9,700 qualified teachers, implementation of Harmonised Retirement Age, and consistent payment of salaries have strengthened classroom instruction and addressed critical manpower gaps within the system. The flag-off of the ₦150 Million School Grant scheme has also empowered schools to fix urgent needs, while the provision of mobility support for quality assurance officers across the state has significantly enhanced school monitoring, accountability, and service delivery.

Your administration equally launched Project BRACE-UP (Building Rights to Access and Compulsory Education for Un-enrolled Pupils) further underscoring your commitment to addressing the educational challenges associated with poverty and out-of-school children.

Together with your support for teacher professional development, school infrastructure expansion, climate education initiatives, and strategic partnerships with development agencies, these interventions have repositioned basic education as a cornerstone of the state's development agenda.

As we commemorate Democracy Day today, we celebrate not only the resilience of our democratic institutions but also the impact of a government that places the welfare of its people at the centre of governance. Your administration's achievements stand as enduring evidence of what purposeful and people-oriented leadership can accomplish.

We pray that Almighty God continues to grant Your Excellency wisdom, strength, good health, and divine guidance as you lead Benue State towards greater peace, prosperity, and development.

EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN BENUE SUBEB INSPECTS FGN/UBEC DIRECT INTERVENTION PROJECTS IN VANDEIKYA, EMPHASISES QUALITY DELIVERY IN BASIC EDUCATION INFRASTRUCTURE

The Executive Chairman of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Grace Adagba, on Friday conducted a media survey and inspection of the classroom blocks, offices, laboratories and WASH facilities undertaken through Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN)/Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) 2024 and 2025 Direct Intervention Projects at St. Francis Special Needs School, Vandeikya, and LGEA (NKST) Primary School, Moor, as part of ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and learning conditions in basic education across the state.

At St. Francis Special Needs School, Dr. Adagba stated that the inspection was aimed at assessing the quality and extent of work executed ahead of the formal handover of the projects to the Benue State Government. While appreciating the Federal Government and UBEC for the interventions, she expressed dissatisfaction with shortages in furniture supply and structural defects, stressing that the identified shortcomings should be rectified to meet prescribed minimum standards.

At LGEA (NKST) Primary School, Moor, however, the Executive Chairman commended the contractor, Hovah West Africa Services, for delivering quality work that met expectations, noting that the administration of His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has remained committed to upholding minimum standards in basic education infrastructure across the state.

Speaking during the inspection, UBEC Project Supervisor, Engr. Yissa Yakubu, assured that all observations and defects identified during the survey would be documented and addressed through the appropriate corrective processes. Equally, the Education Secretary of Vandeikya LGEA, Chief Mrs. Cecilia Tyogema, LSM, commended the FGN/UBEC interventions, noting that the projects have restored public confidence in public school system, improved the learning environment and stimulated increased enrolment, particularly at the Special Needs School.

In their separate remarks, the Vice Principal of St. Francis Special Needs School, Sister Dorathy Ejim, and the Headmaster of LGEA (NKST) Primary School, Moor, Mr. Iorlumun Terkimbi, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, UBEC and the Administration of Gov. Hyacinth Iormem Alia for their interventions. They noted that the projects have transformed previously dilapidated learning environments, enhanced teaching and learning through the provision of modern facilities and instructional materials, and contributed significantly to increased enrolment.

BENUE SUBEB, UBEC FLAG OFF TREE PLANTING CAMPAIGN AND GREENING CLUBS IN 40 SCHOOLS, ENGAGE UNICEF, JICA ON BASIC EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT

The Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has intensified efforts towards environmental sustainability and infrastructure development through a series of engagements involving government institutions and development partners.

The Board, in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Benue State Council on Climate Change and UN TER Limited, commemorated the 2026 World Environment Day with the official flag-off of Greening Clubs and Tree Planting Campaign in basic schools across the state.

Flagging off the initiative, the Honourable Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Dr. Margaret Adamu, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Basic Education, Mrs Bibiana Tyoishi, described environmental education as critical to achieving sustainable development and building climate resilience among younger generations. She highlighted the commitment of the Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia to sustain the environment through ongoing climate policies and ecological restoration initiatives.

In her address, the Executive Chairman of Benue SUBEB, Dr. Grace Adagba, stated that the programme was designed to nurture environmental stewardship among learners and promote practical climate action within school communities. She announced the establishment of Greening Clubs in twenty schools and disclosed that forty schools would each plant twenty trees under the campaign. Dr. Adagba also conveyed the approval of His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia for the fencing and renovation of RCM Primary School, Poor, Makurdi.

The event featured goodwill messages from representatives of UBEC, Mr. Idzi Baba Emmanuel; the Benue State Council on Climate Change, Dr. Daniel Mailumo; and UN TER Limited, Mrs Stephen Ahile who commended Benue SUBEB for pioneering a school-based environmental initiative aimed at fostering climate consciousness among pupils.

In a related development, the Board hosted a one-day Stakeholder Engagement on Education Needs Assessment in collaboration with UNICEF. Presenting the assessment report, UNICEF Education Specialist, Enugu Field Office, Mr. Believe Eke, identified critical gaps within the basic education sector and called for collaborative efforts towards developing evidence-based interventions to improve educational outcomes in the state. Stakeholders deliberated on the findings and proposed actionable measures to guide future programming.

Similarly, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Nigeria Office, led by Programme Coordinator, Education, Mr. Stephen Nwanya, and Hikaru Kusakabe, Basic Education Advisor, paid a working visit to the Board to review progress on ongoing school rehabilitation initiatives under the Grant Aid Project and discuss implementation readiness.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Adagba disclosed that the intervention is now being implemented through UBEC's Direct Intervention programme following the completion of surveys and feasibility studies. She revealed that St. Theresa's Primary School, Wurukum, is among the beneficiary schools earmarked for comprehensive rehabilitation. The JICA delegation also donated 120 Mathematics Drill Textbooks for distribution to schools in support of numeracy development among learners.

Eid al-Adha is a sacred occasion which symbolizes faith, sacrifice, selfless charity and service to humanity as exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim, and I heartily, felicitate with all Muslim faithful in Benue and beyond on this solemn commemoration.

As we also reflect on the impactful years of purposeful leadership under His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, I deeply appreciate the invaluable contributions of the Muslim community towards promoting peace, moral values, social harmony, and the advancement of basic education and child development across Benue State.

Through sustained support for learning in the donation of teaching and learning materials, community mobilization, and advocacy for the welfare of vulnerable children, the Muslim faithful have remained dependable partners in our shared commitment to building a more inclusive, enlightened, and compassionate Benue, efforts which are superlatively sacrificial in nature.

At the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board, we remain resolute in our efforts to building a brighter future where every child can learn, grow, and thrive in dignity.

Through deliberate reforms and child-focused interventions, the Board continues to strengthen access to safe, inclusive, and quality basic education across the state. BENUE SUBEB FLAGS OFF MONTHLY SCHOOL GRANT, DISTRIBUTES MOBILITY AIDS, WARNS AGAINST ILLEGAL LEVIES

The Benue State Government on Monday flagged off the Benue School Grant Scheme and distributed mobility aids to Quality Assurance Officers across the 23 Local Government Areas at a ceremony held at the Headquarters of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

In her opening remarks, the Executive Chairman of the Board, Dr. Grace Adagba, described
the School Grant Initiative as a bold and visionary intervention of the administration of His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Chief Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, aimed at addressing the realities of operational sustainability in schools. She disclosed that the state government has released ₦150 million under the scheme, with each Headmaster and Principal receiving ₦50,000 monthly for stationery, continuous assessments, first aid materials, utilities, and minor maintenance.

Dr. Adagba said the initiative reinforces government’s commitment to free and compulsory education and warned that henceforth, any Headmaster or Principal found imposing illegal levies on pupils or parents would face sanctions.

Flagging off the programme on behalf of the Governor, the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Barr. Dr. Sam Ode, MNI, described education as the greatest investment of government and noted that the initiative would strengthen school administration, improve learning conditions, and enhance monitoring in rural communities through the provision of motorcycles to Quality Assurance Officers. He added that the programme aligns with the World Bank-supported HOPE Education Grant and places Benue among leading states in education reforms.

In separate goodwill messages, the Honourable Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Dr. Margaret Adamu, and the UBEC State Coordinator, Mr. Idzi Baba Emmanuel, commended Governor Alia’s commitment to educational transformation and praised the synergy between the Ministry and SUBEB in driving impactful reforms.

Highlight of the event was the symbolic presentation of school grant cheques to RCM Primary School Ihugh, Vandeikya; UBE JSS Walomayo, Makurdi; and St. Francis Primary School, Otukpo, representing the three senatorial zones, while motorcycles were presented to Coordinating Education Secretaries on behalf of Quality Assurance Officers statewide.
