How To Survive In A Nigerian Campus In This Recession by ItalianWine(f): 10:22am
I have spent all of my previous semesters as a student of Obafemi Awolowo University living on campus, and witnessing both the awesomeness and horrors of students living in the famous halls of residence. Life's pretty harsh around here, I've seen people go an entire day on an empty stomach, whilst still chasing multiple lectures in multiple locations, and after it all, they return to their rooms to soak Gari in the murky "Omole water" (named after the erstwhile Vice-Chancellor), and paltry peanuts and sugar. Pile all that on top of the misery of the current economic recession and growing inflation, resources dry up fast, and students end up drained, emaciated, in poor psychological state, overall in very bad shape. It's a hard life. But you should learn to afford yourself as much comfort as possible.

1- Manage your resources

All fingers are not equal. This saying is too popular to be forgotten, and yet many students have no value for it other than to recall it sometimes when they it helps them little. There's always a lot you want, but there's only a portion of it that you NEED. You need to use a scale of preference in every situation. Your friends and neighbours may be wearing cool shirts and nice shoes to every class, looking fresh and expensive. But that's what you see, what you cannot immediately notice is the difference between what resources they have and what you have, and even what they themselves are going through beneath those cool faces.

So you have #3000, what are your needs? First, write down everything you wish you had at the moment, now pick out the ones that you cannot do without. You're running low on foodstuffs, and it may be a while till you get any more money. But you also want this really cool shoes, so ask yourself which one you cannot live without.

Also, do you know that those snacks and meals at canteens are sapping more of your resources than you can imagine? If you buy one "Gala" sausage roll for #50 and the plastic bottled 7up for #100, you've spent #150, and of that five hundred naira in your hand you have #350 left. It still feels like a lot, till you buy #100 recharge card, Sugar and peanuts for #50, and then you have #200 left. You photocopy someone's notebook for #40, bought banana chips for #50 amidst lectures, and a sachet of pure water for #10. And now you have #100 left, in just half a day.

What could you have done, you could have bought vegetable for #100, cow skin (Ponmo) for #120, and #20 locust beans. Then you could have used the little palm oil left to cook it with some powdered pepper, and you have something to eat with for 3 days! You eat "Eba" or Rice with it, you'll be fine, with about #260 left. You'll eat before going to class and you won't need the junk food!

Manage your resources well.

2- Don't suffer in silence

When you're low on cash, or you're down on foodstuffs, don't hesitate to tell someone about it. Your Parents, your relatives, your friends... If you're not frivolous with your spending don't be shy to ask when you're in need. Don't just surmise that the economy is bad, look for those who can help you, and tell them about it. Suffering in silence is the worst thing that can happen to a student, just tell someone about it, someone who can help you.

3 - Don't overdo anything

Don't overspend, over-buy, overtly stress yourself, or trouble yourself with needless burdens. Don't buy 3 things of which you need one. You probably do not need another pair of jeans. And you probably do not need an extra pair of shoes, and you probably shouldn't get it.

Don't go out of your own way to buy a girl/guy anything! Your girlfriend or your boyfriend is not your wife/husband! And that girl who's your crush is not going to fall in love with you because you bought her #1000 recharge card, in fact, she may be using your attraction to her as an advantage. Be wise.

And have fun. Carefully

5 Things That Will Happen In 2017 JAMB That Have Never Happened Before 01/03/2017

5 Things That Will Happen In 2017 JAMB That Have Never Happened Before by Yarnvibes(f): 6:15pm
The Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) has made some major changes in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) for 2017.

We updated some information on the examination earlier. More adjustments have however been made, and these are some of the things that will happen this year, that have never happened before:

1. Fourth Choice
JAMB has also introduced a fourth choice of school option for candidates but would only be able to select only one government school while filling out their forms online.

2. No choosing of public university
The following was also announced: The new registration platform will now be first choice, second choice, third choice and fourth choice and not most preferred, preferred etc as it was.

Candidates’ first choice can be a College, University, Innovative Enterprises Institutions or Polytechnic/Monotechnic. However, if a candidate makes a Public University his first choice, he will not have any public University to choose for 2nd, 3rd and 4th choice.

He will have on the remaining three choices, a College, a Polytechnic, Private University and IEI’S. However, candidates for the 2017 UTME can now select NCE (College) or ND (Polytechnic/ Monotechnic) as their 1st choice up to 3rd choice and the 4th IEI.

They can select the IEI (Innovative Enterprise Institution, ND) as their 1st choice up to the 4th choice, but can only pick a public university once.

3. JAMB form sold late
The organizers of the major examinations in the country, including JAMB met to avoid a clash in schedules and in order to have a harmonized timetable.

An agreement was reached at the national headquarters of the Board in Abuja on Tuesday, January 24, after a meeting with National Examination Council (NECO), West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Business and Technical Examination (NABTEB) to harmonize the timetable.

This is one reason the registration is yet to begin.

4. Mock UTME
While speaking the body also announced that plans were in place for a mock UTME and this might explain the delay in beginning the sales of the examination forms. So if you are preparing, start your preparations now, so you can do well in both the mock and the real deal.

5. No scratch card
Speaking on the issue of scratch card, the registrar explained that one reason for the delay was due to issues the board had with sale of scratch cards.

He said that whereas candidates used to buy scratch cards to access the forms online previously, they planned to cancel that since it had been abused thoroughly.

According to Daily Trust, he said: “What we want to do is for students to pay directly to government coffers and we are working out the process of doing so to avoid the type of abuse that it has been subjected to.

“So, we want to sell directly and to make sure that candidates pay into TSA account. We have cases of students saying their scratch cards got burnt, others saying their scratch cards were swallowed by snakes or lost in an accident.”

13 Practical Guides to Attaining Academic Excellence
Posted: 23-Jan-2017 [13:11:14] into General by kayodesblog for school | 3 Comments
To be a success is not a child's play. There are prices that needs to be paid in order to be successful. Climbing the ladder to the peak of one's career requires a lot of seriousness, diligence, attention and focus.

To be successful means the ability to achieve one's aims and goals in life. It goes beyond having high grades or participating in class. Academic excellence entails taking the extra mile to achieve the set goals, avoiding any distractions and being on the tracks till one get to the finishing line. Those who are successful in their careers do not jump down from the Heavens neither do they have bigger heads and wider brains. Students can also be like their mentors only if they can follow the steps and pathways to achieving success.

Below Are 10 Pathways To Academic Excellence

1. Have at least 80% class attendance: Truancy should be done away with. Lectures should be taken with seriousness. 100% class attendance should be recorded, when this 100 percent attendance might not be possible due to illness or other unavoidable excuses, class attendance should not be less than 80%. High class attendance allows students to flow with what is being taught which will have a positive effect on academic performance.

2. Know yourself:. Discover when, where and how best you assimilate when reading and make use of it. Do not walk in other people’s shoes nor be a copy-cat. If you are the type that assimilates well during the day, plan your time and make your day free and less strenuous. Do not join others that play all through the day. You never can say if they make use of their nights. If you assimilate well at night, sleep during the day so that you will be wide awake at night.

3. Establish a good study habit:. Notes and assignments should not be left till the following day. Assignments should be done on the day it is given. Students should see that they do not sleep without reading what they are being taught for the day. Related reading materials and textbooks should be coupled with notes. Students should read before coming to class and after each lecture. Notes should not be piled up till when examination or test is near. Crash reading is not a technique for successful students.

4. Utilize the libraries and research centers for more knowledge and information. The books, textbooks, journals and other related academic materials in the libraries should be utilized. More materials can also be sought online, Google is your friend.

5. Conducive reading environment should be used for study:. School and public libraries should be the abode of students. A quiet environment free of any form of distraction should be used for study. By this, less time will be spent on reading coupled with high assimilation rate due to lack of distraction.

6. Time management:. Time is an important factor in one's life. It is essential and waits for no man. We all have 24 hours in a day. The successful ones also have the same hours available to them. Students must plan their day and manage their time. To achieve a fulfilled day, the activities in the day must be planned and strictly followed. Twenty-four hours time table can be drafted with the day's activities clearly outlined. Time should be allocated to study, siesta, assignment and for other activities like house chores.

7. Proper notes should be taken in class: Good and neat notes should be taken in class. The areas where the teachers lay emphasis on should also be noted. Students should write notes when given and should pay rapt attention in class so as not to miss important information. The habit of collecting notes from friends should be frowned upon.

When absent, notes should be copied from the serious students and not from the back-benchers who might not hear the teacher correctly. The no

The NYSC body has released the timetable for the 2016 Batch B stream II orientation course. The management has informed prospective corps members and other stakeholders that the 2016 Batch ‘B’ (Stream II) orientation course will commence on Tuesday, 24th January, 2017.

As prospective corps members prepare for NYSC orientation camp starting on January 24, what do they need to know that no one else will tell them?

1. Get to camp early so you can get the best rooms and settle in. Since camp opens on January 24, 2017.

Get there as early as possible on that day, before all the bests rooms are chosen. You don’t want to spend 3 weeks in a room you don’t like.

2. Choose your room with care, check for wall sockets, fans, and good beds. Also pick a room that is not close to the toilets.

Wall sockets might help with charging, working ceiling fans will keep away the likely heat.

3. In your room, choose the top bunk, so you are closer to the ceiling fan or a bunk bed close to the window to help you survive the heat.

4. To avoid losing valuables, buy a padlock for your bag and get a waist pouch to keep your keys, phones and money.

5. If you plan to give your clothes to the dry cleaners, then you should get a permanent marker and put your code number on all your items of clothing, so they don’t get mixed up.

6. Set a daily alarm, so you can wake a little earlier and you get to have a little time to prepare before the drill instructors come.

7. It is important that you make friends, so do not keep to yourself, some make valuable friendships in camp. Some even meet spouses.

8. Visit the mosque in the morning for prayer, if you need few minutes of extra sleep.

9. It might be difficult at first, but try to enjoy the drills, they will keep you fit and in shape.

10. Do not be afraid to eat both camp and mammy food. Have a schedule, you will spend less and enjoy more.

11. If you want to be posted to a particular place for your year of service, get a request letter from your preferred place of PPA and give to your platoon leader on time while in camp.

12. You will be waking up early a lot of time, so catch up on sleep, any chance you get, you will leave the camp with better health.

13. It is not a do or die affair. You can easily leave the camp if your health is not good, just apply for ‘exeat’, ask your platoon leader how to go about it.

14. If you do not want to march for your platoon, you should join the Martial arts classes, they are quite fun and you will learn self-defense.

15. Make sure you fill the ‘Book of life’ while in camp. It is one of the most important things to do.

16. Lastly, have fun.

National Youth Service Corps - NYSC
NHIS SET TO ENROL CORPS MEMBERS

All serving Corps members are to be enrolled in the National Health Insurance Scheme to enable them access qualitative healthcare.

Executive Secretary of the NHIS Professor Usman Yusuf disclosed this today when he visited the NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Sulaiman Kazaure.

He said the proposal followed a Presidential directive on evolving measures that would enhance access to qualitative healthcare for the Corps members.

Usman said NHIS officials would go to all camps during Orientation course to capture biometric data of Corps members as a first step in the process of enrollment.

He explained that, as the Corps members get posted to places of primary assignment, the NHIS would assign each of them to a hospital where they would be getting treatment in the event of illness.

The Executive Secretary also said the agency had made proposal to government to enable it make direct payments to hospitals that would renders healthcare services to the Corps members instead of doing so through the Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs).

This, he said, was to avoid hitches often occasioned by failure of some HMOs to make appropriate payments to the hospitals.

The Executive Secretary also announced plan to deploy Corps members posted to the NHIS for primary assignment to its Desk Offices that would be established in all hospitals nationwide.

"The Desk Officers will be there to serve as advocates for the enrollees and for them to be our ears and eyes in the hospitals.

"They have direct access to me. So if there are problems in the hospitals; with the doctors or the nurses, if they are not treated well or the HMOs are not paying them, they know who to get to," he added.

Usman also explained that the planned deployment of Corps members to the Desk Offices was part of several measures the agency would be taking to ensure their effective utilization.

Reminiscing on his service year experience, the Executive Secretary lauded the role of the NYSC in the unity and development of the country, and went to say he supports its continued existence.

Responding, the Director-General, Brigadier General Sulaiman Kazaure, thanked the NHIS for coming up with the idea of enrolling Corps members.

Kazaure disclosed that the NYSC Management was already nursing similar idea, adding that it would help to advance Corps welfare policy of the Scheme.

The Director-General also welcome the proposal by NHIS to make direct payment to hospitals noting that payment through an HMO led to the failure of a previous initiative by the NYSC on enrollment of Corps members several years ago.

He, however, appealed to the NHIS to ensure that the Corps members enjoy comprehensive services instead of the present situation whereby many healthcare providers claim that the NHIS does not cover certain healthcare needs.

7 Ways To Remember Everything You Read In The Exam Hall
It is one thing to read for an exam and it is another thing to remember what you have read few days later. Many students on campuses do face these challenges at school. In this article i will be sharing with you seven (7) ways to remember everything you read in the examination hall.

Read enough- The first step to remember is to read. The fact is if you do not read there is nothing to remember. Read through all required materials and study them carefully before you go to the exam hall.

Understand what you read- Read thoroughly, and after reading ask yourself this simple questions ” Do i understand this stuff “. Understand each line, each paragraph, each passages and each chapter before moving to the next one. Every lines has hidden details you should take note of.

Write it down- Put in writing what you have read. By so doing you will be less likely to forget what you have written many times.

Revise it again- Constant practice makes perfect. It is not enough to read a note once. Finish it ones or two time before the exam day.

Involve yourself in group discussion- Discuss with your friends of like minds. Organize a group chats where you discuss the knowledge you have got. This will help you remember all what you have read.
Argue with friends- This is what i did during my undergraduate study in Ahmadu bello university. I argue with friends on difficult topics. That way we agree and disagree , then arrive at a conclusion.

Use Adrenaline- Now this is my main secret. Have always noticed that you tend to read and remember things more during exam period. This is the power of Adrenaline. Make sure you read the note over and over and answer all related questions before you enter the exam hall. There is no way you should forget it since it is still hot and fresh.

Good Luck !!!
