MINUTES OF ST. CLEMENT MINOR SEMINARY LOKOJA, OLD BOYS MEETING HELD IN THE SEMINARY COMPOUND, ON 25TH JULY, 2012
The meeting started at about 5:15pm. Fr. Paulinus Ogor welcomed all present and thanked God for journey mercy. He in a very special thanked old Boys present for heeding to his call for this all important meeting and appreciated the sacrifices they made to be at the meeting. Since it was the first official meeting of the body he begged the house to permit him to welcome to the high table, dignitaries present. Very Rev. Fr. Cyril Ayobode Fanaiye, the Chancellor of the Catholic diocese of Lokoja; Professor Matthew Idowu Ajibero, Rector Kogi State Polytechnic and Mr. Bayo Omopariola were all welcomed to the high table. Fr. Paulinus Ogor put before them the task of forging a footprint on the way forward for the association.
Very Rev. Fr. Cyril Fanaiye immediately told Fr. Paulinus Ogor to lead the opening prayer. Having said the opening prayer, Very Rev. Fr. Cyril Fanaiye officially welcomed those present and thanked God for making this day a reality; he stated that this is the beginning of something all have wanted for a long time. He requested that all Old Boys present put down their names and data and also make it a point of duty to tell classmates, contemporaries that were not able to make it about the outcome of the meeting and what was agreed upon and that no matter the outcome of today’s meeting the most important thing is that we have started something. He went further to say that he will not be staying till the end of the meeting because he has a pastoral engagement for the evening.
Professor Ajibero taking over from Very Rev. Fr. Cyril Fanaiye requested all Old Boys present to introduce themselves for familiarity purpose. This exercise was done as well as the collection of names and data of those present at the meeting. Professor Matthew Ajibero also gave the names and phone numbers of twelve of his classmates that could not make it for the meeting. At this point, two dignitaries came in; Mr. Joseph Ochalifu, former Kogi State director of chieftaincy affairs and CEO Rock Garden Hotel, Lokoja and Mr. Moses Aba, National Orientation Agency, Abuja. They were also welcomed to the high table.
After the introduction, Professor Matthew Ajibero thanked God for the reality of today and thanked all present for coming. He expressed how happy he is to be in the meeting; according to him, each time he meets with any of his contemporaries they always discuss how possible it will be to start an Old Boys association for their alma mater. Today, it has become a reality. He went further to say that many of his classmates were interested in coming for the meeting but, unfortunately he gave them a wrong date. He however, apologized and promised to brief them on all that was discussed. He went further to say that today being the first meeting, we shall not be discussing much but to get acquainted with ourselves and to map out the way forward. He therefore opened the floor for all to speak.
The floor was opened for all to speak and all who spoke appreciated the effort of Fr. Paulinus Ogor in making sure that today is a reality. Mr. Joseph Ochalifu in a very special way thanked God that the meeting was able to hold. He stated that there use to be the meeting of old boys of the school in the past but eventually it went into extinction. He also stated that he has always desired that an official body like thus be formed. He prayed that as we begin again, may this body continue to grow from strength to strength. He remembered his days in the seminary, and how St. Clement contributed immensely to who he is today. He stated that his three years in St. Clement minor seminary was his best in all the institutions he attended. He thanked God for making him pass through the walls of this seminary. He also stated that at the last seminary harvest held in St. Clement chaplaincy, he promised on behalf of the association to donate the sum of one hundred thousand in support of the seminary harvest. He went further to say that he has been able to reach some of his classmates and they have promised to contribute towards it.
Mr. Moses Aba was nostalgic in his speech, remembering his years in this compound. He stated that the story of his life cannot be complete without a mention of St. Clement minor seminary. He remembered his days in St. Clement and all St. Clement imparted on him. To show his love for the seminary, he said he only got the message for the meeting by 12.00pm today, but since it was St. clement calling, he had to leave everything he was doing and come. He thanked God for the happy re-union and said he has always wanted this as an old Boy of this school. Mr. Bayo Omopariola, another member of the high table also joined his voice to the other speakers. He also admonished the youngest old Boys of St. Clement to keep the flag flying by remaining good ambassadors of the seminary.
Mr. Cosmas Umeh in his speech was all full joy that ex-students of St. Clement both old and young could gather in the name of the Old Boys of their alma mater. He said he was honored to meet Professor Matthew Idowu Ajibero and all dignitaries present. He stated that the set of 2001 where he belongs and is privileged to be their Head Boy met at December last year, but that was at the classmate level; but for the success of the meeting of the larger house, he is very happy. He concluded by pleading that all be committed to this cause and make themselves available each time they are called for meeting.
Dr. Adewale Oke not wanting to repeat all others have said thanked God for the reality of the meeting. He said that because of his love for the seminary and his wish for something like this, he left his tight scheduled in LUTH, where he presently works for the meeting. He prayed that the body will continue to grow from strength to strength. Barrister Noel Kadiri was also grateful that this meeting was able to hold. He said that since the day he got the message of the date for this meeting, he has always longed for it; Hence, his joy at being in this meeting. He however went further to say that this body must immediately start planning on how to help in the growth and development of the seminary. The seminary has given so much to us and we must now in turn give back to the seminary. He therefore begged the elders(those on the high table) to formulate a plan, if possible by opening an account where Old Boys can from time to time send in contributions to the seminary. Mr. Charles Akeredolu in his own speech requested that we make good use of brothers in different fields.
Fr. Paulinus Ogor in a very special way thanked all present for honoring his invitation for the meeting. He thanked dignitaries present especially Professor Matthew Ajibero who was the first to arrive for the meeting for finding out time to come even in the tight schedule s of the Polytechnic. He blessed God for the success of the meeting. He went further to say that this meeting was fixed for today in order for us to incorporate our new members immediately, if fixed for any other day, it might be difficult to get them. He therefore apologized for the inconveniences it caused those present because it was a working day. He quickly stated that many Old Boys promised to be here today including Priests of the diocese but due to one reason or the other they called to be excused and that others are still on their way coming. He stated that it was the desire of the seminary authority that the ex-students of this seminary form an alumni body. Hence, it was agreed at the PTA meeting that each graduating student will have to pay the sum of ten thousand naira as a registration fee to the association. This will actually help to keep young members in the association. He also went further to thank the elders of the body who have been running the association single handedly. He made mention of Mr. Joseph Ochalifu who was said to have the practice of sending in cow to the seminary annually and who at the program for the last seminary harvest sent in a goodwill message on behalf of the body and also promised in due time to bring in contribution to the harvest on behalf of the body. He also acknowledged the contribution of Professor Matthew Ajibero stating that the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Lokoja, Most Rev. Dr. Martin D. A. Olorunmolu mentioned publicly at the seminary harvest that he contributes annually to the training of the seminarians of the diocese. Fr. Paulinus Ogor begged younger members of the body present to emulate the good example of their elders and work towards the growth and development of their alma mater by committing themselves to this body. He ended by once again thanking all those present and praying for journey mercy as they go back.
Professor Matthew Ajibero thanked all who have spoken. He first thanked the seminary community for the initiative of incorporating the young ones into the body through financial commitment. He stated that the factor that has been militating against the establishment of this body has been who will carry the financial burden of organizing the body. He at this point again thanked Fr. Paulinus Ogor for his financial sacrifices in seeing that people were able to attend this meeting. He went further to address the issue of the promise Mr. Joseph Ochalifu made on behalf of the association at the seminary harvest. It was agreed that members present should send in contributions to him for the debt was on the body, hence, his account number was given to all present. On the financial responsibility of members, he suggested that it can only be agreed upon when we have a working executive; he requested that we suspend it till our next meeting when we shall elect our executives. So also on the issue of an account for the body, he advised that we suspend it, because opening an account for a body will involve many intricacies.
Professor Matthew Ajibero requested that we agree on the date for our next meeting. After deliberating, it was agreed that we meet on 23rd November 2012, the feast day of St. Clement, the Patron Saint of our alma mater. He tasked all present to make it a point of duty to reach classmates, friends and contemporaries on the decisions reached at this meeting and more importantly on the next date of our meeting. He finally thanked all present, especially Very Rev. Fr. Cyril Fanaiye who started the meeting with us.
Fr. Paulinus Ogor announced to the house that the seminary now has a website, and also a group in facebook for Old Boys. He also announced that the seminary community invites the body to the graduation ceremony and launching of their magazine which will take place this next day. Mr. Cosmas Umeh led the closing prayer while Fr. Paulinus Ogor gave the benediction. The meeting ended at about 6.45pm without 41 members in attendance.
