A lifelong love of reading begins in childhood, when your child’s habits will be largely determined by activities at home. By working to harbor a love of reading in your child, you can encourage a spirit of curiosity and a thirst for knowledge that will be integral to success throughout your child’s academic career. With the tips below, you can help your child build a love for reading along with the language skills needed to tackle more advanced material in every passing year.
Kids readingTurn off the television
If you spend more time reading, your child will follow your example and read for leisure too. Therefore, it may be helpful to set up quiet hours at home free of television, computers, cell phones, and other electronic distractions.
Read to your child from an early age
The first step in teaching your child to read is reading aloud to your child during infancy. When your child is just a few months old, he or she will be able to see pictures, follow your voice, and turn thick cardboard pages. As your child gets older, he or she can follow along with the story and join in reading aloud. Even once your child is able to read independently, sharing time reading aloud together can be valuable bonding time for your family.
Start a home library
Having favorite books on hand will keep your child interested in reading and allow your child to return to old favorites between new reading assignments. Dedicating one or two bookshelves to your child’s own selections can be helpful for building a passion for literature from a young age.
Independent reading is an integral component of the Early year method, which is the basis for the Preschool, Nursery and Primary Programs at R & A Kiddies School, If you are interested in seeing how an Early year education can shape your child’s future success, schedule a visit with us by calling our
