Gbenga Adigun made it a conviction.

Founder and CEO of Scrella Technologies Limited. Co-Founder and CEO of Rebar Perfecta Limited. Class President of LBS OMP 37. And now, the man who has committed to sponsoring one Lagos Business School MSc in Management scholar. Every year.

Not a one-time gift. A recurring act of belief.

It started quietly. Through LBS's Lagos Business School Alumni Association - LBSAA mentorship program, Gbenga was paired with an emerging entrepreneur. Most mentors offer time. Gbenga offered that, and when his mentee needed capital to bring new product lines to life, he provided debt financing and helped turn a business plan into a functioning business.

He did not stop there. He contributed to the Enugu Chamber of Commerce Industry Mines and Agriculture Premium Exhibition and Convention Hall at the Enugu International Trade Fair Complex, the infrastructure designed to open markets, grow commerce and create opportunity at scale.

And now, every year, one deserving young person will sit in an LBS classroom, not because they could afford it, but because Gbenga Adigun decided their potential was worth investing in.
That scholar will go on to lead companies, shape industries and one day, perhaps give back the same way.

That is how legacies compound.

A doctor walked into an MBA programme.

He walked out with a new perspective on how to change healthcare across the continent.

In 2021, Ijeweme Odiawa loved medicine, but he could see problems that no prescription could fix. Problems that required business acumen, leadership and the ability to drive systemic change.

He applied for the Q-Life Family Clinic MBA Scholarship, not knowing where the opportunity would lead.

"Hearing I was selected almost made me cry. I sat quietly alone in my room, soaking in this new information and I knew something had changed forever."

What followed was extraordinary.

As part of the Lagos Business School Full Time MBA (FTMBA) 20 Cohort, Ijeweme did not just gain a qualification, he gained a completely new lens through which to see the world.

He moved into healthcare focused venture capital. He contributed to investments in African health tech startups. He worked on initiatives that reduced maternal mortality by up to 40% in communities across Lagos and Kaduna.

Then he raised capital and built his own company.

Today, Ijeweme Odiawa is the Managing Director of NovaCare Partners Ltd.

But perhaps the most telling sign of his transformation came when he briefly returned to clinical medicine. Something was different:
"I began looking for systemic problems to solve, not just individual patients to treat."

One scholarship. One decision. One year that rewired how he thought, led and acted.

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵.

Growth often begins with confidence. Sometimes, all it takes is for someone else to believe in your potential before you fully recognise it yourself.

For Boluwatife Sanwo of the Lagos Business School Modular MBA (MMBA) 5 Cohort, pursuing an MBA was about preparing for greater responsibility. Having built a career in the technology and innovation ecosystem after studying Chemistry, she knew she needed a stronger foundation in business, finance, strategy and leadership to help build organisations that could scale sustainably across Africa.

Receiving the CIL Acquico Scholarship made that ambition possible.

"I was both excited and relieved, and of course also immensely grateful. It was a real game-changer because it meant I could pursue the MBA without constantly worrying about how I would fund it."

While the scholarship eased the financial burden, it also gave her something far more enduring: the confidence to aim higher.

"Someone had looked at my application and decided I was worth investing in and that meant a lot. It encouraged me to approach the MBA differently and I felt a responsibility to make the most of the opportunity, to contribute meaningfully in class, to keep learning, and to continue aiming higher."

That confidence became the foundation for remarkable growth.
One of the defining moments of Boluwatife's MBA journey came during the Lagos Business School - MBA Mini-Keynote Competition. Earlier in the programme, public speaking had been an area she wanted to improve. By the end of the competition, she had emerged as the First Runner-Up, a milestone that reflected just how much she had grown.

"It was one of those moments where I realised how much I had grown since starting the programme. It reminded me that the value of the MBA wasn't just in the lectures or coursework but also in the opportunities to grow as a consummate professional."

Today, Boluwatife continues to apply that growth in her career, approaching business challenges with greater strategic thinking, leading more confidently, and contributing to initiatives with a broader perspective. She also hopes her journey encourages other young professionals to invest in themselves, embrace opportunities, and believe in what is possible.

Looking to the future, she hopes to create the same opportunities for others that were created for her.

"I've benefited from people who invested in me long before they had any guarantee of what I would become. I believe that's one of the most meaningful things anyone can do for another person, and I would love to be able to create that opportunity for someone else someday."

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿? 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀.

Before joining the Lagos Business School Modular MBA 5 (MMBA 5), Theodore Okafor was a freelance software engineer who had just begun turning a side project into a business. Coming from a family of civil servants with limited exposure to entrepreneurship, he wanted to acquire the skills to build a business that would make a difference.

Then life happened.

The same month he was admitted into the Lagos Business School - MBA programme, his freelance contract came to an end. Another one did not come for almost three years. At the same time, he and his wife were expecting their first child.

He had planned to finance his MBA himself, but suddenly, the future looked uncertain.

"When I learned that I had gotten the scholarship, it was a huge relief for me and my family. My wife was the first person I shared it with, then my siblings and my mother."

The scholarship gave Theodore something invaluable: the freedom to keep building.

"Frankly, the only reason I was able to continue working on my business was that I had the scholarship. If I didn't have the scholarship, I would have put my MBA programme on hold to look for a full-time freelance engagement or job"

Today, Theodore is the Founder and CEO of Dot Campus Africa, an EdTech platform that has grown from offering six tech courses to more than 20, with over 30 professionals mentoring learners. Together, they have equipped more than 2,000 young Africans across seven countries with technology skills.

Giving back is already part of Theodore's journey. Through Dot Campus, he built a platform that allows people to learn tech skills for free as long as they keep showing up to learn. Beyond that, he and his friends sponsor WASSCE and JAMB examinations for brilliant students in public schools in his hometown in Anambra State, supporting successful candidates through university.

Looking back, Theodore hopes those who made his scholarship possible know that their generosity continues to ripple far beyond his own story.

"I would say that I am deeply grateful for their generosity, and I want to ask them to continue giving because they have made a tremendous impact in my life and the life of many other people, and that the ripple effect of their impact is being felt across Africa, and that their honourable investment in the future of the underprivileged is not in vain."

Sometimes, the greatest return on a scholarship is not measured by one person's success but by the opportunities they go on to create for others.

𝗔 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗽𝗼 𝗔𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻'𝘀 𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗜𝘁 𝗴𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗶𝘁.

Before joining the Lagos Business School Full-Time MBA 18 (FTMBA 18), Dolapo Amusan had already rewritten his career once.
He trained and practised as a medical doctor for four years before stepping into branding and marketing communications. Later, he co-founded a jewellery startup in Lagos. By the end of 2018, he knew he needed a deeper understanding of business to keep building.

The Lagos Business School - MBA was the next step. The scholarship made it possible.

"I had been in constant touch with officers from the admission office and already making concrete plans towards the start of the MBA. When I finally got the email that I was approved for the scholarship, of course, my wife was the first one to hear the news. We knew what impact the offer of a scholarship meant to the financial capabilities to go into the program. It was quite a moment of joy, and a subtle nudge that going in for the MBA program was definitely the right choice for me at that time."

What stayed with him, however, wasn't only the financial support.
"Receiving a scholarship offer, apart from the financial support, also reinforced the belief of 'You are good enough'. I had always been taught to have extraordinary belief in myself (if I don't, who will?). But every now and then, external validation comes to reinforce it. The scholarship offer was such reinforcement."

Today, that reinforcement is visible in the career he has built.
Dolapo credits his LBS experience with accelerating his transition into tech and product management. The network he built, the exposure to Nigeria's digital ecosystem, and the Digital Business Management classes all helped prepare him for his first post-MBA Product Manager role.

The impact has reached beyond his own career. As the first of four siblings, his decision to pursue a second degree has inspired each of them to see postgraduate education as a pathway to building careers they truly love.

And when asked whether he hopes to create the same opportunity for someone else, his answer is simple.

"Yes, I plan to pay it forward when the time is right."
For Dolapo, a scholarship was never the finish line. It became the beginning of a new chapter, one that continues to shape his career, influence his family, and, one day, create opportunities for someone else.

On Friday, 19 June, Lagos Business School had the privilege of attending QLife in Bloom, a celebratory event marking the relaunch of Q-Life Family Clinic's state-of-the-art healthcare facility.

The occasion drew distinguished leaders from across healthcare, education, and the faith community, including Prof. Akin Abayomi, Hon. Commissioner for Health, Lagos State; Pastor Ituah Ighodalo; and Prof. Enase Okonedo, Vice Chancellor of Pan-Atlantic University. Prof. Abayomi delivered the keynote address, while Pastors Ituah Ighodalo and Tolu Adesanya offered prayers to dedicate the newly relaunched facility.

For Lagos Business School, the event was equally an opportunity to celebrate a valued partner. Through its sponsorship of Lagos Business School - MBA scholarships, QLife has demonstrated a commitment not only to improving healthcare outcomes but to investing in the leaders of tomorrow. Founded in 2000 by the late Dr Olufunmilayo Alakija, QLife Family Clinic was built on a simple but powerful conviction: that families deserve quality, patient-centred healthcare they can trust.

Following her passing, her husband, the late Dr Adetokunbo Alakija, carried the vision forward with equal dedication. From four members of staff, the clinic has grown into an internationally accredited institution, including recognition by the US Consulate and CDC as an accredited panel site for immigration medical examinations, now serving hundreds of individuals and families with a team of over 30 professionals.

Today, the next generation of the Alakija family continues that journey. Alero Alakija, Chairperson of the Board, alongside her sisters Dr Toyin Alakija Adepoju and Seyi Alakija, are preserving and advancing the vision their parents so lovingly established.

Supporting them is Dr Olayinka Olowojolu, Medical Director, who leads the clinic's operations with a quiet but evident commitment to clinical excellence.

As we celebrate the relaunch of this remarkable facility, we also pause to honour the enduring legacy of Dr Olufunmilayo and Dr Adetokunbo Alakija, proud alumni of Lagos Business School and the generations of leaders who have carried their vision forward with such grace and purpose.
