IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS

An Idiom is an expression, or phrase whose sense is something different from that which it implies literally. In other words, it is a fixed expression whose meaning is not usually suggested by it’s separate words. There is no logical connection between the meaning of an idiom and the meanings of the individual words it contains.

HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE LEARNERS

Being effective in life isn't usually by chance. In the majority of circumstances, it is a result of the decisiveness of the individual involved. Same goes for students, it is the decisiveness of individual learner that impacts on the effectiveness of their studies. In this article, we will take a look at some important traits that can help learners reach their full potential.

Perhaps the most important trait of an effective learner is the ability to set realistic and achievable goals even before working hard to reach these over a set period of time. Having something to work towards is motivation on its own, and motivation is quite vital to keep learners engaged in their studies. Set goals can be of two types: long term and short term. A short term goal can be completing an assignment within a short period and a long term goal can be completing a particular project at the end of a school year or academic session.
Another habit which successful students possess is displaying a genuine desire to learn and do well. A student may not be good at everything but must be willing and desiring to be the best. If eventually such student is not the best, there is the likelihood of being among the best. A genuine thirst for excellence is key factor for any effective student as it makes learning more enjoyable and also increases knowledge retention and application. Those who stay focused and put 100% effort into every exercise are normally the highest achievers.
Some people think that those who work constantly and put themselves under a great degree of pressure are naturally the ones who are most successful, this is rarely the case. The reality is that those who find a good balance between work and rest are the ones who extract the greatest range of benefits from their studies. Balance is very important because the brain too needs a break. When a learner works round the clock, physical, emotional and mental stress sets in and before you know it, ideas become confused. A healthier approach would be to plan out activities making sure that there is opportunity for the body and the brain to relax. For instance: taking a walk after about two hours of reading to unwind, seeing a movie over the weekend.
The above are few of the most important habits that highly effective learners have in common. No doubt, these traits can help students reach their full potentials as both people and learners.
