*GLOBAL HANDWASHING DAY 2025*
Theme: BE A HANDWASHING HERO

Every year, on the 15th of October, the world comes together to observe Global Handwashing Day — a day dedicated to promoting the simple yet powerful act of washing hands with soap and clean water. At Universal Whitehall Schools, we proudly join millions around the world to celebrate this life-saving practice and to reinforce the culture of hygiene among our students, pupils, staff, and families.

🌍 *Origin and Global Recognition*

Global Handwashing Day was first established in 2008 by the Global Handwashing Partnership (GHP) — a coalition of international stakeholders including *UNICEF, USAID, World Health Organization (WHO)*and other health advocacy groups. It was created to raise awareness and understanding about the importance of hand hygiene as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.

Since its inception, Global Handwashing Day has been celebrated in over 100 countries, including India, Kenya, Bangladesh, the United States, the United Kingdom, Ghana, Nigeria, Indonesia, and the Philippines, among others. These nations use the occasion to organize school-based campaigns, public demonstrations, and community outreach programs aimed at promoting good hygiene behaviour.

🧴 *The Global Impact of Handwashing*

The impact of handwashing extends far beyond the sink — it is a global health intervention with transformative effects. Studies reveal that proper handwashing with soap can:
• Reduce diarrheal diseases by up to 50%.
• Decrease respiratory infections (like influenza and pneumonia) by 20–25%.
• Lower the spread of infections in schools and health facilities, leading to improved attendance and productivity.
• Prevent the transmission of emerging diseases, including COVID-19 and Ebola.

Globally, countries that have institutionalized hygiene education — such as Singapore, Japan, and Sweden — record some of the lowest rates of communicable diseases. Meanwhile, developing nations are increasingly adopting hygiene promotion as part of their public health policy frameworks.

Happy International Day of the Girl Child! 💖

Today, we celebrate every girl’s strength, voice, and potential.
This year’s theme — “The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis” — reminds us that girls are not just the future; they are powerful leaders today.

At White Hall Junior School, we honour every girl’s courage, brilliance, and dreams. Keep shining, keep leading, and keep believing in yourself. 🌸✨
