Markaz: Yesterday, Today, and the Foreseeable Future
📍 Introduction
The class commenced, as usual, with praises to Almighty Allah and abundant salutations upon the best of mankind, our master Muhammad ﷺ, his noble household, his illustrious Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and all those who follow them in righteousness until the Day of Judgment.
📌 Sheikh Muhammad Habeebullah Al-Ilory (Baba Lagege) was asked about the False Messiah (Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal / المسيح الدجال).
He answered that Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him) is called Al-Masih (the Messiah) because he used to wipe/touch sick people with his hands and they would be healed, and he raised the dead by touching them when his people challenged him to prove his prophethood.
Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal is an impersonator who will claim to perform miracles similar to Prophet Isa (A.S.), just as every true prophet has faced impersonators.
📌 Baba Lagege was then asked: What are the works of Dajjal, and how do we recognize him?
He explained that Dajjal will perform fake versions of what Prophet Isa (A.S.) did.
📌 Sheikh Muhammad Habeebullah was asked about the difference between Al-Imam Al-Mahdi (الإمام المهدي) and Al-Mahdi Al-Muntazar (المهدي المنتظر).
Baba Lagege made it known that these concepts were largely shaped by political conflicts during historical disputes over the Caliphate (Khilafah) of the Prophet ﷺ. The Fatimid Dynasty was among those who gave glad tidings to their followers that a Mahdi was coming to spread justice on earth. Throughout history, there have been many claiming or given the title of Mahdi, such as the Mahdi of Sudan who fought the British during colonization.
He noted that several narrations (Ahadith) reported in this regard include:
عن أم المؤمنين أم سلمة رضي الله عنها: «المَهْدِيُّ مِنْ عِتْرَتِي، مِنْ وَلَدِ فَاطِمَةَ»
On the authority of Umayyad/Mother of the Believers Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her): "The Mahdi is from my lineage, from the descendants of Fatima."
عن علي رضي الله عنه، قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: «الْمَهْدِيُّ مِنَّا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ، يُصْلِحُهُ اللَّهُ فِي لَيْلَةٍ».
On the authority of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The Mahdi is from us, the People of the House (Ahl al-Bayt); Allah will rectify him in a single night."
عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه، وفيه أن النبي ﷺ قال: «كَيْفَ أَنْتُمْ إِذَا نَزَلَ ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ فِيكُمْ، وَإِمَامُكُمْ مِنْكُمْ؟»
On the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), where the Prophet ﷺ said: "How will you be when the son of Maryam descends among you while your leader is from among you?"
Looking critically at such political contextualizations, Baba explained that many back-and-forth narrations surrounding these figures were fabricated due to political motives.
📌 Baba Lagege asserted that Prophet Isa (A.S.) will not return. He noted that the Qur'an does not explicitly state this, and those who attempt to force that interpretation are reading the text according to their own preferences.
He cited the following verses:
{فَبِمَا نَقۡضِهِم مِّیثَـٰقَهُمۡ وَكُفۡرِهِم بِـَٔایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَقَتۡلِهِمُ ٱلۡأَنۢبِیَاۤءَ بِغَیۡرِ حَقࣲّ وَقَوۡلِهِمۡ قُلُوبُنَا غُلۡفُۢۚ بَلۡ طَبَعَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهَا بِكُفۡرِهِمۡ فَلَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ إِلَّا قَلِیلࣰا (155) وَبِكُفۡرِهِمۡ وَقَوۡلِهِمۡ عَلَىٰ مَرۡیَمَ بُهۡتَـٰنًا عَظِیمࣰا (156) وَقَوۡلِهِمۡ إِنَّا قَتَلۡنَا ٱلۡمَسِیحَ عِیسَى ٱبۡنَ مَرۡیَمَ رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ وَمَا صَلَبُوهُ وَلَـٰكِن شُبِّهَ لَهُمۡۚ وَإِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱخۡتَلَفُوا۟ فِیهِ لَفِی شَكࣲّ مِّنۡهُۚ مَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍ إِلَّا ٱتِّبَاعَ ٱلظَّنِّۚ وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ یَقِینَۢا (157) بَل رَّفَعَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِلَیۡهِۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَزِیزًا حَكِیمࣰا (158) وَإِن مِّنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ إِلَّا لَیُؤۡمِنَنَّ بِهِۦ قَبۡلَ مَوۡتِهِۦۖ وَیَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ یَكُونُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ شَهِیدࣰا (159)}
{"So for their breaking of the covenant and their disbelief in the signs of Allah and their killing of the prophets without right and their saying, 'Our hearts are wrapped'—rather, Allah has sealed them because of their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few. And [for] their disbelief and their saying against Maryam a great slander. And [for] their saying, 'Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Isa, the son of Maryam, the messenger of Allah.' And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain. Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise. And there is none from the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in him before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection he will be against them a witness."}
[Surah An-Nisāʾ: 155–159]
He pointed out that one commonly misinterpreted verse is:
{وَإِن مِّنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ إِلَّا لَیُؤۡمِنَنَّ بِهِۦ قَبۡلَ مَوۡتِهِۦۖ وَیَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ یَكُونُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ شَهِیدࣰا}
{"And there is none from the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in him before his death..."}
[Surah An-Nisāʾ: 159]
He explained that this does not mean Prophet Isa (A.S.) will return in the future so people can believe in him; rather, it means that no individual among the People of the Book passes away without realizing upon their death that Isa (A.S.) was a true messenger of Allah and had nothing to do with the doctrine of the Trinity.
He further cited:
{وَإِذۡ قَالَ ٱللَّهُ یَـٰعِیسَى ٱبۡنَ مَرۡیَمَ ءَأَنتَ قُلۡتَ لِلنَّاسِ ٱتَّخِذُونِی وَأُمِّیَ إِلَـٰهَیۡنِ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِۖ قَالَ سُبۡحَـٰنَكَ مَا یَكُونُ لِیۤ أَنۡ أَقُولَ مَا لَیۡسَ لِی بِحَقٍّۚ إِن كُنتُ قُلۡتُهُۥ فَقَدۡ عَلِمۡتَهُۥۚ تَعۡلَمُ مَا فِی نَفۡسِی وَلَاۤ أَعۡلَمُ مَا فِی نَفۡسِكَۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ عَلَّـٰمُ ٱلۡغُیُوبِ (116) مَا قُلۡتُ لَهُمۡ إِلَّا مَاۤ أَمَرۡتَنِی بِهِۦۤ أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ رَبِّی وَرَبَّكُمۡۚ وَكُنتُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ شَهِیدࣰا مَّا دُمۡتُ فِیهِمۡۖ فَلَمَّا تَوَفَّیۡتَنِی كُنتَ أَنتَ ٱلرَّقِیبَ عَلَیۡهِمۡۚ وَأَنتَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ شَهِیدٌ (117)}
{"And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, 'O Isa, Son of Maryam, did you say to the people, "Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?"' He will say, 'Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen. I said not to them except what You commanded me—"Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness.'"}
[Surah Al-Māʾidah: 116–117]
📌 Baba Lagege was then asked: How do we recognize the falsehoods of Dajjal?
He answered that Dajjal is not merely a single one-time individual, but a continuous phenomenon manifesting in different forms over time. He recalled a past lecture where he stated that modern systems like America embody the Dajjal of this era, noting the symbolic single-eye image on the United States one-dollar bill.
He cited the prophetic narration:
عن عبد الله بن عمر رضي الله عنهما، عن النبي ﷺ أنه قال: «مَا مِنْ نَبِيٍّ إِلَّا أَنْذَرَ أُمَّتَهُ الدَّجَّالَ، أَلَا إِنَّهُ أَعْوَرُ، وَإِنَّ رَبَّكُمْ لَيْسَ بِأَعْوَرَ، مَكْتُوبٌ بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْهِ كَافِرٌ». (رواه البخاري ومسلم)
On the authority of Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet ﷺ who said: "There has been no prophet except that he warned his nation against the Dajjal. Beware, he is one-eyed, while your Lord is not one-eyed, and written between his eyes is 'Kafir' (disbeliever)."
(Reported by Al-Bukhari [7408] and Muslim [2933])
He stated that such global forces entice nations to borrow money under the guise of freedom, only to entrap future generations in debt slavery, alongside spreading global diseases.
📌 Sheikh Muhammad Habeebullah was asked if there is a relationship between the Mahdi and Dajjal.
He answered that there is no real functional connection between them; both concepts were leveraged historically as political instruments to achieve personal and sectarian goals.
Over time, many Muslims accepted these ideas and developed diverse views on where and how the Mahdi or Dajjal would be born. Ubayd Allah al-Mahdi was the first to claim the title of "Mahdi" when establishing the Fatimid Dynasty in 297 AH. Similarly, during the Abbasid era, Caliph Al-Mansur named his son "Al-Mahdi" for political maneuvering to make people believe he was the awaited figure.
📌 Wisdom Nuggets
On Authenticity vs. Hypocrisy:
Life places you in three positions: to accept, to reject, or to be a hypocrite. Choose whichever path you wish, but above all, do not be a hypocrite. Be cautious of befriending hypocrites; they are masters of deceit—eating with the wolf, barking with the dog, and crying with the shepherd, constantly playing along with whoever surrounds them.
The Parable of the Honey Drop:
A single drop of honey fell on the floor. A small ant passed by, tasted it, and tried to leave. But the sweetness tempted it back. It tasted it again, got caught in the pleasure, and decided to step fully into the honey. It became trapped, unable to walk, and died there.
Life is like that drop of honey. Everyone receives their portion. If a person is contented with what is sufficient and uses only what they need, they will walk through life peacefully. But whoever falls obsessively in love with the world forgets that every road leads somewhere and every traveler has a destination. Take what helps you on your journey and do not let the world stop you from reaching your final destination. Success is not possessing much, but being content with what you have. Place the world in your hands, not in your heart.
On the Transience of Life:
Life is a passing shadow. Do not let that which is temporary make you forget that which is eternal.
On Sin:
Do not look at the smallness of your sin; look instead at the Majesty of the One you sinned against.
On Reflection:
Always reflect on how you spend your days.
On Personal Paths:
Not everyone who went ahead of you is better than you, and you are not superior to those behind you. Everyone has their own path, every path has its timing, and behind every timing is a wisdom known only to Allah.
On Contentment and Wealth:
Do not focus envious eyes on the provision (rizq) of others; focus on your portion from Allah. Contentment is the first door to true happiness. Poverty is not the lack of money, nor is richness the abundance of wealth; the poorest person is the one enslaved by what he owns, and the richest is the one who possesses what money cannot buy.
He recited the following poetic verses on contentment:
رَأيْتُ القنَاعَة َ رَأْسَ الغنَى ،،، فصِرتُ بأَذْيَالِهَا مُمْتَسِكْ
I saw that contentment is the peak of wealth, so I held fast to its robes.
فلا ذا يراني على بابهِ ،،، وَلا ذا يَرَاني بهِ مُنْهمِكْ
Thus, no one sees me begging at their door, nor does anyone see me obsessed with their possessions.
فصرت غنيا بلا درهم ،،، أَمُرُّ عَلَى النَّاسِ شِبْهَ مَلِكْ
So I became wealthy without a single dirham, walking among people like a king.
📌 Conclusion
The session concluded with special prayers for the soul of the reformer of Islam, Sheikh Adam Abdullah Al-Ilory (may Allah have mercy on him).
May Almighty Allah preserve Sheikh Muhammad Habeebullah Adam Al-Ilory (Baba Lagege) upon goodness, grant him sound health, increase him in beneficial knowledge, bless his efforts in the service of Islam, and preserve Markaz and all those striving sincerely in its cause. Āmīn.
