This photo was in 2007 when housewives in Nigeria groaned over kerosene scarcity.

At that time, there were complaints that the price of the commodity at some filling stations which was ₦80 per litre was selling at ₦100 in some others while retailers sold at ₦120.

19 years later, the price of a litre of kerosene is almost ₦4000.

In a recent report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS, in its “Household Kerosene Price Watch” for April 2026), Sokoto recorded the highest average retail price at N3,965.10 per litre.

Kebbi followed with N3,808.75 per litre, while Lagos residents paid N3,790.90. The report also showed Katsina at N3,743.09, Edo at N3,639.16, Niger at N3,572.57, Plateau at N3,425.20, and Zamfara at N3,386.09 per litre.

Bayelsa recorded the lowest average retail price at N1,815.40 per litre, followed by Kogi at N1,982.02 and Yobe at N2,235.77. Kano recorded N2,385.53 and Anambra recorded N2,398.53.

In 2006, as impeachment moves against Ekiti governor Ayodele Fayose intensified, PM NEWS reported that he seized the phones of his deputy, Abiodun Olujinmi, and restricted her movement to stop her from communicating with opposition figures.

The report quoted sources as claiming that Fayose acted after learning of an alleged plan by President Olusegun Obasanjo to have Olujinmi succeed him if he was removed from office. Fayose reportedly insisted that if he went down, his deputy would go with him.

The report also said the Ekiti Chief Judge, Justice Kayode Bamisile, was preparing to announce a seven-man panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office levelled against the governor by the lawmakers of the state.

The crisis deepened after reports that some legislators wanted both Fayose and Olujinmi removed so the Speaker could take over, with the Majority Leader as deputy governor. Obasanjo, however, reportedly warned that such a move could trigger a constitutional crisis, since the Speaker could only govern for 90 days before a fresh election.

The report further quoted sources as saying the president urged Ekiti stakeholders to allow Olujinmi take over to avoid further instability, but many opposition figures rejected the proposal. There were also claims that plans were underway to move the deputy governor to Abuja ahead of Fayose’s expected impeachment.

ADDENDUM:
Ayo Fayose was impeached as governor of Ekiti State on 16 October, 2006 during his first term in office.

After Ayo Fayose was impeached in October 2006, the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Chief Friday Aderemi, briefly became acting governor for a few days. Soon after, President Olusegun Obasanjo declared a state of emergency in Ekiti State and appointed retired military officer Brigadier-General Tunji Olurin as administrator of the state.

As fate would have it, Fayose remained popular in Ekiti politics, a strategy which helped him become governor again through an election, years after his impeachment.
