Dei immigrated to Canada in 1979 and attended McMaster University for his Master’s degree.

He later earned his PhD from the University of Toronto. He is best known for being an educator, research, writer, academic, and community worker, with research interests in anti-racism, minority schooling, international development, anti-colonial thought, and indigenous knowledge systems.

He is currently a Professor of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Social Justice Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto.

In 2012, he received the honorary title of Professor Extraordinaire from the School of Education with the University of South Africa.
