SMC Hosts Lola Shoneyin as a Guest Lecturer

Last Friday, 100-level and 200-level Mass Communication students hosted Ms Lola Shoneyin, Director of Ake Arts & Book Festival and author of The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, as a guest lecturer.
Ms. Shoneyin shared her background and career trajectory before delving into the strategies employed by her publishing firm, Ouida Books, to produce high-quality publications, including A Spell of Good Things by Ayobami Adebayo, Binti by Nnedi Okorafor and Daughter in Exile by Bisi Adjapon.
Following the lecture was a panel discussion on the Challenges and Prospects of the Nigerian Publishing Industry. This allowed Ms. Shoneyin to field questions from students, including Favour Obiekwe, Oluwaseyifunmi Oyekanmi and Adaora Ndaguba. The questions ranged from the effects of digital media on storytelling to the intersection between activism and art.
The guest lecture was coordinated by Mr. Muideen Kolade, an adjunct faculty member at SMC, to enhance students’ understanding of the course, Manuscript Editing, Design and Layout in Book Publishing.
The guest lecture serves as an avenue through which SMC bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, equipping students with actionable industry insights and practical networking opportunities.
