🎢 HOW TO CONSTRUCT THE PELOG PENTATONIC SCALE

"WHAT IS THE PELOG PENTATONIC SCALE?"
The Pelog pentatonic scale comes from the traditional gamelan music of Indonesia. Unlike Western pentatonic scales, Pelog has a unique flavor, with intervals that create a mysterious, exotic, and spiritual sound. It’s one of the most distinct pentatonic scales because it uses larger and uneven steps, giving gamelan music its haunting beauty.

Pelog Pentatonic Scale Formula
Scale Degrees:
1 – β™2 – 4 – 5 – β™6 – (1)

Intervals (from root):
R – minor 2nd – perfect 4th – perfect 5th – minor 6th – octave

Step Pattern (in whole and half steps):
H – (M3) – W – H – (W + H)

W = whole step (tone)
H = half step (semitone)
M3 = Major 3rd (two tones)

🎡 Example: C Pelog Pentatonic Scale
Let’s build it step-by-step:

1. C
2. Dβ™ (H)
3. F (M3)
4. G (W)
5. Aβ™ (H)
6. C (M3)

βœ… C – Dβ™ – F – G – Aβ™ – C

🎢 HOW TO CONSTRUCT A MAJOR PENTATONIC SCALE

What is a major pentatonic scale?
The major pentatonic scale is a five-note scale derived from the major scale. It removes the 4th and 7th degrees of the major scale, which are considered more dissonant, leaving only the more stable tones. This results in a scale that sounds open, melodic, and universally pleasant. It's widely used in folk, gospel, blues, rock, and even pop music across the globe.

Major Pentatonic Scale Formula
Scale Degrees:
1 – 2 – 3 – 5 – 6 – (1)

Intervals (from root):
Root – major 2nd – major 3rd – perfect 5th – major 6th – octave

Step Pattern (in whole and half steps):
W – W – (W + H) – W – (W + H)
W = whole step, H = half step
W + H = 1Β½ steps, also called a minor third

🎡 Example: C Major Pentatonic Scale
Let’s build it step-by-step:

1. C
2. D (W)
3. E (W)
4. G (W + H)
5. A (W)
6. C (W + H)

βœ… Final notes: C – D – E – G – A – C

This simple scale avoids semitones entirely, making it easy on the ear and perfect for melodic improvisation.

🎢 How to Construct a Melodic Minor Scale

"WHAT IS A MELODIC MINOR SCALE?"
The melodic minor scale is a unique version of the minor scale that gives melodies a smoother, more flowing sound, especially when moving upward.
It combines the natural minor’s depth with the brightness of the major scale.

Unlike most scales, the melodic minor scale is different when going up (ascending) and when coming down (descending).

* Ascending: Raise the 6th and 7th notes by a half step
* Descending: Return to the natural minor form

Let’s build a C melodic minor scale (ascending):

Formula (whole and half steps):
W – H – W – W – W – W – H

Example: C Melodic Minor Scale

1. C
2. D (whole step)
3. Eβ™ (half step)
4. F (whole step)
5. G (whole step)
6. A (whole step)
7. B (half stell)
8. C

βœ… C – D – Eβ™ – F – G – A – B – C (Ascending melodic minor)

⬇️ Descending Version

The descending scale uses the natural minor:

Formula (whole and half steps):
W – W – H – W – W – H – W

C – Bβ™ – Aβ™ – G – F – Eβ™ – D – C (Descending)
So:

* Ascending: Use A and B
* Descending: Use Aβ™ and Bβ™

🎢 How to Construct a Major Scale

"WHAT IS A MAJOR SCALE?"
The major scale is one of the most important and commonly used scales in music.
It’s the scale that gives music a bright, happy, and clear sound, it is popularly known as β€œDo – Re – Mi – Fa – So – La – Ti – Do.”

🎯 The Major Scale Formula

The major scale follows a specific pattern of whole steps and half steps:

W – W – H – W – W – W – H

Where:

* W = Whole step (skipping one key)
* H = Half step (moving to the next immediate key)

Example: C Major Scale

Let’s use the formula to build a major scale starting on C:

1. C ➑️ D (Whole step)
2. D ➑️ E (Whole step)
3. E ➑️ F (Half step)
4. F ➑️ G (Whole step)
5. G ➑️ A (Whole step)
6. A ➑️ B (Whole step)
7. B ➑️ C (Half step)

C – D – E – F – G – A – B – C
That’s the C Major Scale, the easiest to learn because it uses only white keys on the piano (no sharps or flats).

This W–W–H–W–W–W–H formula helps you build a major scale on any note, not just C.

For example:
1. G Major Scale
  G – A – B – C – D – E – Fβ™― – G
 (Notice the Fβ™― to keep the pattern correct!)

2. F Major Scale
  F – G – A – Bβ™ – C – D – E – F
 (Here, B becomes Bβ™ to follow the half step rule)
