Of Valentines, Christmas and Easter
This is my own basic contribution to the discourse of valentine, Christmas and Easter. Some Christians have said these celebrations should not be done as Christians, they claim that they give rise to revelries, drunkenness and all sorts of abnormal behaviors in people, those that go against these celebrations also talk of the fact that many have paganistic origins and should not be observed by Christians. While some of the concerns are valid, I will like us to take a look at scripture and find out what the bible has to say about these opinions. I will like you to study Romans 14 and 1 Corinthians 8 from where I will be taking many of my arguments from. Rom 14:5 says ‘one man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth everyday alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind’ verse 14 of the same chapter says ‘ I know and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth anything to be unclean to him it is unclean’ this simply means (as you study the whole chapter in context), clean and unclean has nothing to do with the day or food but the person, human beings define the days and not the day or event, 1 Cor 8: 5-10 reads ‘4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.
5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
7 Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
8 But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.
9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;
Paul teaches that the Christian do not consider idols as anything, and even talks of ‘sitting at meat in the idols temple’ in verse 10, so the believer can actually not only eat food offer to idols but go into their temple to eat the food, the only problem as Paul mentioned is not to cause others to fall, this is understandable as people just coming out of idolatry might misunderstand the action and think it is an endorsement of that particular idol, but the point I’m trying to make is what makes a day or food unclean is not the day or food in itself.
If anyone conducts himself or herself unseemly during valentine, Christmas or easter it’s not because of those days it’s because that’s who they are, the believer has been recreated in Christ in Righteousness and true holiness.
In Gen 2: 19-20 God brought all the animals to Adam to name them and the bible says ‘And whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof’ same goes with the new creature in Christ Jesus, the day does not name us, we name the day and whatever name we give it is what it becomes, if the church has decided to celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25 regardless of what it has been hitherto that is what it is, same goes for easter and valentines day, as far as I know, many churches use the valentines day as an opportunity to teach on issues relating to marriage and relationships, many believers also spend the day appreciating their spouses, this is fine, so feel free to celebrate your loved ones Jesus has brought us to freedom, shalom.
