*Opportunity Card: Why you should begin your German language course NOW*
Many of you now know that the German Opportunity Card is finally out (since June 1, 2024). It is a type of card that third country nationals (anyone not from the EU) can secure to move to Germany to search for a skilled job and reside.
It is a point-based system that professionals can accumulate (minimum of 6-points) based on criteria such as: academic qualifications, language skills (German or English), work experience, link to Germany and age. In addition to these, an applicant must be able to prove that he/she has sufficient financial resources to stay in Germany pending when a suitable job is secured (proof of funds). This can be proven in form of:
1. Blocked account of €12,324
2. A 20hr job contract
For those who can afford it, the blocked account is the most straightforward option. However for those who find this out of their financial capability, the 20hour job contract is the natural go to option.
*20hr job contract*: This is a contract of any part time job that applicants can do once they arrive in Germany. Many companies/establishments only offer such contracts to residents of Germany (those with a permit to work in Germany). However, with this new Opportunity Card possibility, a number of establishments will become open and be legally able to offer contracts to third country nationals who are going to be seeking the Opportunity Card.

As beautiful and juicy as this sounds, the reality about Germany is that, a large percentage of jobs will require German language skills. Hence, it is important for you to know that the list of jobs that will be available in the next couple of weeks will certainly require German language skills (at least a large percentage of such offers). For those who probably think that they will only focus on the few that might accept only English language skills, do know that such offers will be highly competitive and your chance of securing one will become significantly reduced. Whereas, for those who have at least a B1 German proficiency, offers will abound for them and they will easily clinch a suitable 20hr job, apply for their Opportunity Card and relocate to Germany (from this year).
It is therefore a smart move for anyone considering the Opportunity Card to begin their German language acquisition NOW so that once job offers are listed, they can take advantage of this to secure their proof of funds for the Card.
