How Homeschooling Changed Our Lives

I never thought I could homeschool my kids. I was a full-time working mom in Nairobi, Kenya, and public school felt like the only option. But after the pandemic, I saw my children strugglingâlarge class sizes, lack of personalized attention, and stress from endless homework. My eldest, then 10, started dreading school, and my youngest, 6, barely spoke in class.
One day, I stumbled upon a local homeschooling group. I joined just to ask questions, and before I knew it, I was deep in research. I met other moms from Lagos, Accra, and Johannesburg who were doing itâand thriving! I decided to try homeschooling for a year. If it didnât work, weâd go back to school.
The first few months were tough. I struggled to balance house chores, planning lessons, and keeping my kids engaged. I kept questioning myself: âAm I doing enough?â But then, something amazing happened... My kids became excited about learning!
My son, who used to struggle with math, started enjoying it through hands-on activities. My daughter, once shy, blossomed because she wasnât afraid to ask questions anymore.
Two years later, I can confidently say homeschooling was the best decision for us. My kids are happier, learning at their own pace, and even pursuing their own interests. We travel more, do nature studies, and explore African history in a way that schools never taught.
My biggest advice to new homeschoolers?
Trust the process, find a community, and rememberâlearning happens everywhere!

Why is homeschooling important? Well, it's hard to realize until you try it. There's a lot more to it than people talk about, and it can make a big difference for children.

Learning from Family: Children can learn about their heritage directly from their parents.
Safe Learning Space: Homeschooling keeps kids safe at home, away from potential dangers.
More Learning Materials: Families can find and use a wide range of educational resources for homeschooling.
Well-Rounded Learning: Homeschooling teaches kids not just academics, but also life skills and values.

Below are some simple steps to kickstart your homeschooling journey:
1. Research Your State's Homeschooling Laws:
This is very essential especially if you're in a country where there are laws on homeschooling.
A part of your research is to first familiarize yourself with the homeschooling regulations in your state or country. Each jurisdiction may have different requirements, so it's crucial to understand your legal obligations as a homeschooling parent.

As a matter of fact, you are free to withdraw your child from normal schooling without any restrictions or documentation. Just homeschool as long as you want.

This is a powerful image from Karim Saidi-art. He pictured it perfectly.
It shows that children are inherently good, and when they become cruel, we all need to look in the mirror and be curious to ask ourselves, 'Was that modeled my the home?'
Let say maybe its not towards them, but in the conversations parents have about others, how they treat their spouses, how siblings are treated, or how a parent even treats people at a store or market places.
Our children are always watching!đ
So remember, be the PERSON who you want your CHILD to BECOME!â€
Picture: A young boy who is bullying another boy while the parent is watching because apparently she has linked her bad character to her child.
