ASUU strike: Experiment your options on public primary and secondary schools

ASUU does not just wake up overnight to declare a strike. Strike actions are declared after all other options are exhausted and produced no result. An MoA was signed in December 2020 with a timeline and FG refused to implement it, not even the components that have no financial implication. All other measures have been explored and did not yield any results.

ASUU had several engagements with the government that produced no results. The National Assembly was lobbied by ASUU to intervene and it did not produce the expected result. Religious leaders (NIREC) under the co-chairmanship of the Sultan of Sokoto, His Highness Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III; and the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Mr. Samson Olasupo Ayokunle intervene and it produced no result within the timeline given.

Then, all the ASUU branches in February 2022 unanimously voted for the declaration of the strike. Prior to that, ASUU gave 14 weeks' strike notice to FG without any response. ASUU NEC declared a 4-week warning in accordance with the decision of the members and the government did not take it serious. The strikes were rolled over before it was recently declared indefinite. So, if you are in this situation what are the options left? Give up and move on? You are really patriotic.

Meanwhile, there has been "peace" in our primary and secondary schools since NUT lost the strength to go on strike for several years now. But despite the peace, we have all stopped taking our kids to public primary school.

ASUU has no alternative to strike at the moment. That is the only strategy that has forced the government to release the interventions that have given our public universities a semblance of a university. The other option I can see is for the public to stop sitting on the fence and to be bold enough to tell the government to take its responsibilities serious. The president was elected by the public. We are all stakeholders.

Finally, my proposition to those proposing alternatives to the ASUU strike is to first experiment the options they want to sell to ASUU in the revival of public primary and secondary schools. We can then discuss it after the result is out.
