Mummy “Why is this a 1 and not a 10?” 😅

That question is exactly why concrete comes before abstract. I recently taught my 5 year old place value using real units and tens, hands first, digits after. Kids don’t learn math from a worksheet, they learn it by building it.

Early Years will ALWAYS have my heart 💚 Teaching a child numbers? Go from CONCRETE to ABSTRACT. Before they see the numeral “3,” let them count real things first, beads, Legos, pencils, anything works. Simple shift, but it makes number sense stick.
