🇳🇬 Happy Independence Day, Nigeria! 🇳🇬
At Crest Islamic International School, we celebrate this day by reflecting on our nation’s history and honouring those who stood for our freedom. Here is a touching Independence-themed poem written by one of our Grade 10 students, Moridiyah Mustapha:
*Sons and Daughters of the Soil*
Nigeria, a country flowing with rivers and oil,
Strangers from afar sought after the oil.
We were blind and ignorant of their ploy,
Chasing other things while they planned their foist.
Our kings and queens who once cherished our soil,
Now looked forward to the strangers’ toys.
The strangers came to toy with our oil,
But made us think they came to help our soil.
Little by little, they claimed our soil,
Like others long ago, who came to claim our boys.
We were stuck in a never-ending cycle of toil,
And soon realized the strangers’ ploy.
We longed to break free from their coil,
But we were no match against their boys.
Standing against them were sons of the soil,
Who struggled to free us from their coil.
Then many more stood with their choice.
Today, we enjoy the fruit of their toil,
All thanks to the sons and daughters of the soil.
