I saw a post by a teacherwho was suprised that a middle grade student did not know what chalk was.

I wanted to scream "Of course she does not know she was born in another time!!!!"

I didnt scream. I remembered the day I taught formal and informal letter writing. After I had diligently followed the curriculum, I spoke about how to address the envelope and where to put a stamp.

A student raised his hand and asked "Ma'am what is a stamp?"

The light bulb went off. I have successfully wasted 15 mins of these young people's life and mine too.🤦🤦🤦

Of course he doesn't know what a stamp is. It is not a part of his life today. He will NEVER need to know. What was I thinking? Right there I slightly altered the curriculum to teach formal and informal letter as it relates to their lives and shelved everything I had said prior to that as history.

The aim of my story is that
- when your students can find relevance in what you teach, they engage better.

- the curriculum is a guide not an end in itself and in some climes, it needs an enormous overhaul so a teacher must be smart enough to make the needed changes.

Remember, your students are truly born in another time (very different from yours) so come in their world and engage them better.

WHAT'S LOVE ❤️ GOT TO DO WITH A TEACHER?

A great teacher is one that has love for his/her students. We are not talking about the fuzzy feeling but the love that makes the decision every day to help, caref for, teach, reteach, show acts of kindness to students because when students know that you care, they learn better from you. That kind of love is a MUST-HAVE in your "toolkit" and it must be used EVERYDAY.

Could the pandemic be giving us a chance to change this narrative. The monkey will be the very best and as you know, in this group, it not the most intelligent, the strongest, the bravest, the most creative, the most innovative... The test just happen to align with his best intelligence and ability.

Is there a way out where our students can have their best intelligences tested and challenged to do better? We are going to be discussing this on the 20th of February 2021 on Zoom. Register and let's discuss how to get our students/children/wards to learn optimally. It is possible.
