In our recent class, we explored the art and logic behind corset construction — starting with a quarter-scaled overbust corset pattern.

This exercise wasn’t just about cutting shapes on paper, It was about helping students understand how and why garments take form,it to show intentional shaping and detailed paneling — and it’s a perfect example of how technical patternmaking supports real-world garment construction.

It’s not just about making clothes — it’s about understanding the body, structure, and design logic.

This is not just sewing.
This is engineering, art, and confidence-building all in one. 💪🏽 the corset pattern here shows intentional shaping and detailed paneling, which is excellent for demonstrating bust contouring, waist shaping, and seam placement in a real-world context.

One thing I try to incorporate in my teachings, is the ability for my fashion trainees to be able to sew for others, sewing for self is easier,, you know, concealing rough work, not ironing, tacky sewing,poor finishing,wrong color of lining and thread and all other vices, because after all, the garment is yours....

At Hellenal'svogue & Academy after the first 2 practicals, the next practicals and so forth, got them sewing for their fellow trainee, just as a customer would....

Trainee "A" describes the style, Trainee "B" illustrates, source for fabric , sew and vice versa....

This particular trainee is the only one in her batch, and she got me to contend with, Gave here fabric and other resources to needed to birth a casual wear, and here is what she delivered...

Here is how it went down at Hellenal'svogue & Academy in the Dart manipulation class,

We talked about "Dart",it's uses, the different types of dart and the position within the bodice, and we established the 6 basic positions of the bust/shoulder dart, while keeping in mind that the waist dart is constant(There must always be a waist dart, provided the fit of the garment is meant to accentuate woman form or figure).

And we also get to understand the principles involves in adapting the basic bodice to make different designs.

How to move,transfer or shift the bust shaping dart fullness within this 6 basic positions the:

Shoulder
Underarm
Neckline
Waist
CF
Bust

The fact that,aside getting seams and style lines,we can also get other dart manipulation possibilities,e.g(Asymmetrical designs and shapes) by working on full the bodice ,rather than just the half of it.
